West Indies name unchanged squad for Zimbabwe tour

Jason Holder will lead an unchanged West Indies squad to Zimbabwe for a two-Test series that begins later this month. The same 16-member squad recently performed encouragingly in England, losing the Test series 2-1 but pulling off their first win in the country in 17 years in the second Test at Headingley.

The selectors have gone with continuity, which means the likes of Kyle Hope - who only managed 41 runs in the his debut series at an average of 6.83 - and Shane Dowrich - who struggled with the gloves while only scoring 24 runs at 4.80 - keep their places despite enduring a difficult time in England.

"The selection panel is pleased to announce the same Test squad that toured England to visit Zimbabwe," said Courtney Browne, the chairman of selectors. "The dedication, commitment and focus in their preparation and during the series in England showed immense character for such a young team in very difficult conditions against World-class competition.

"The lessons learnt on that tour augurs well for the individual players and the team's continued development as a whole and we wish them well on the Tour of Zimbabwe."

West Indies will begin their tour with a three-day warm-up game against Zimbabwe A, which begins on October 15 at the Bulawayo Athletic Club. The Queen's Sports Club in Bulawayo will host both Tests, the first Test beginning on October 21 and the second on November 2.

West Indies squad: Jason Holder (capt), Kraigg Brathwaite, Devendra Bishoo, Jermaine Blackwood, Roston Chase, Miguel Cummins, Shane Dowrich (wk), Shannon Gabriel, Shimron Hetmyer, Kyle Hope, Shai Hope, Alzarri Joseph, Kieran Powell, Raymon Reifer, Kemar Roach

Normally, it would be interesting to know who will make the ZIM A XI against WI for the 3-day tour match.

But in this case those stats won't matter, just as these Logan Cup stats don't matter. Kasuza can top score again and not get a look in. Mushangwe can top wicekts again and still not get a bowl in poor Bulawayo. If Hameed can get dropped from the national team for poor domestic form, I'd be surprised if that happens.

That Windies side, there is a Darren Bravo sized hole in the middle order.

How important is continuity in a cricket team. We seem to have persisted with the 8-3 team on the Sri Lanka to some relative success. Going by form there is no way in hell Raza would have been on that tour he had a horrible run up to it. But did relatively well on tour. Domestic performance should really count for something. At list when in come to A and Emerging sides selection. Kasuza and Mushangwe have been well and they should be in the A team a list.

I remember Chapungu doing quite well in a T20 domestic competition in the run up to the last t20 world cup but he was ignored. In the same vain Ervine did pretty much nothing in the same tournament and he lost his place.

If Chatara is injured then he's definitely out of the 1st Test. He has been unfit for a long time.

It's settled then. They will definitely go in with this team.

Chamu/Chakabva
Hami
Craig
Taylor
Williams
Raza
Malcolm
Moor(wk)
Cremer
Jarvis
Mpofu

I don't think if they would have picked Mayavo if they wanted him to compete against Regis. They have Regis down as one of the opener options, and Chamu will take it because they are need seam bowling options on that Bulawayo deck. They picked Mayavo to have a look at him, and he will lose out to Moor on "experience".

There is also the possibility that they drop Hami and make Chakabva open with Chamu, or go ahead and pick Mayavo as the keeper, with Moor opening with one of Hami/Chamu/Chakabva. If Moor wasn't dropped after a rather poor Logan Cup, plus Chakabva and Mayavo being included, then they are trying very hard to make sure he's in the XI somehow. Hope I'm wrong.

Less than 300 runs scored by ZIM against WI would be a big let down batting this deep, while WI will be very disappointed in the score less that 500 runs. Easy 2-0 wo West Indies.

I agree that the team selected will probably look very similar to that, alright but not excellent. Personally I wouldn't select either Chamu or Waller, would like to see Solomon Mire get a chance but he hasn't started the Logan Cup season that well.
