Enjoy this thread whilst you can.

Next year, when we start to compete with filth like Afghanistan and Ireland, we will never be able to accurately gauge our players levels on the world stage against past players again. Stats will be meaningless.

In 2002 we were playing England, Aus, India and in 2022 we will be playing Ireland, Bangladesh and Afghanistan primarily, so stats will never be the same.

Run and wickets count in Bangladesh. Ask Joe Root and Steve Smith how many runs they scored in BD. Ask Boult or Steyn or Herath how many wickets they've nabbed in Dhaka and Chittagong. Taylor and Jarvis' feats carry considerable weight IMO.

Was watching some highlights of the Sri Lanka England test where Sam Curran scored a half century. He is test cap number 686. PJ is number 99. This is how far behind we are. Might take another 50 years to get to 686. A lot of the Sri Lankans were between 120 and 130. Test cricket is really tough. Dog eat dog. Just google how long it took the kiwis to be competitive.I don't think we have played enough to have a greatest xi yet.

It only clicked to me watching that test how big of a loss Sam Curran is. Brilliant and gutsy little player. The Currans would have solved 3 positions in our team. Kevin Curran's death cost us dearly.

Sam has an impact on practically every game he plays. That last wicket stand won them the game. He’s got a side strain so they say he might not play the next game, but he’s due to be picked as a pure batsman pretty soon.
He bats down the order at Surrey as well, but wins tests as a batsman? Something wrong with that picture.

Had KC still been with us I suspect he would have sent his boys north. Our cricket would have had to have been looking mighty rosy for them to have been tempted to stay here. At school level Sam did extremely well here, but at age group level Curtis and Welch were probably a bit ahead of him when the bowling was tighter. Sam was always a bit of a dasher, but the other two were rock solid. That was an extraordinary age group. Murray, Curtis, Welch, Curran, Matigimu. Five stand out players that ZC think grow on trees.
