In a bid to spread the game of cricket and widen the selection base, Zimbabwe Cricket recently held a five-day coaching course for the Zimbabwe National Army instructors, which ended on Friday at the CFX Academy.

The basic/intermediate coaching course started at the CFX Academy on Monday with the head of army training, Brigadier-General Justin Mujaji, officiating at the function.
The course included basics of cricket, laws and regulations of the game and code of conduct. The participants are expected to spread the acquired knowledge to their respective army barracks.
A total of 47 personnel from the Army School of Sport attended the course at the academy.
Lieutenant-Colonel Huchu, the commandant of the ZNA School of Physical Training and Sport, highlighted the need for the participants to take the course seriously, as it was important for the army to introduce various sporting disciplines to its members.
“The growth of sport within the ZNA has been so encouraging and I hope that by next year we will be having a cricket team able to compete in the league.
“I believe that we posses a lot of untapped talent and synergies with the ZC are of paramount importance as it will help the game of cricket to grow.
“Most people are aware of Black Rhinos Football Club and Harare District Netball team being the notable teams of the ZNA, but the introduction of the coaching courses will open a new era for the ZNA,” said Colonel Huchu.
The course ended with practical and theory examinations before the participants were issued with certificates of attendance. They will then undergo a three-month internship programme during which they will be attached to a school or club as per coach education policy.
One of the participants, Nickson Nyanhira from 1 Commando Regiment, described the coaching course as an eye-opener.
“The course was of immense benefit to us the participators and we would like to urge the ZC to offer more courses across the country,” he said.
Those who passed with marks higher than 80 percent in Friday’s examinations will got intermediate certificates while those with percentages lower walked away with basic certificates.
The course facilitators were Francis Rashikai (level two coach) and Lazarus Razau (level one coach). ZC managers Levy Hombarume and Claudius Mukandiwa were also co-ordinating the coaching programme.
The training of the instructors is part of ZNA’s corporate social responsibility, an arrangement whereby graduates from its school of sport are not just responsible for coaching their disciplines in their formations and army schools around the country but also extend their services to other schools and communities near them.
It is important to stand up for what is right.

When the Military will now be involved I guess the young boyz will be afraid of the punishment that will come from the military . lol........
But anyway this initiative will mean we can still maintain our talent that would have been lost at school level . We invest a lot at grassroots level and loose out to conutries like England , Australia , New Zealand and SA . We better start putting strategies of retaining out players even if after they have gone overses

indeed basically a mugabe militia same as the police force...

i dont see the harm in the initiative though even though it probably would have been better spent directing it to teachers and school staff
