ALL is set for the Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) junior tournaments that will be held in different parts of the country to select players for national teams.
The tournaments start today and will end on Friday.
Junior teams from the country’s five cricket franchises — Matabeleland Tuskers, Mashonaland Eagles, Southern Rocks, Manicaland Mountaineers and Midwest Rhinos — will compete in the Under-13, -15, -17 and -19 age groups.
ZC selectors will identify talented players for national teams.
Matabeleland Tuskers will play host to the Under-19 competition, which will be held at Christian Brothers College (CBC) with the Under-13s clashing in Masvingo, home to Southern Rocks.
The Under-15s and Under-17s will play their games in Harare.
Matabeleland Tuskers area manager Vumi Moyo said they were looking towards having a good tournament.
“Tuskers are ready to play host to the Under-19 tournament that will be held at CBC. All the logistics have been done and we are hoping to have an exciting five days of cricket action. Most guys who are in the senior national team played together in the Under-19s and that alone may be a motivating factor to up-and-coming cricketers as they know that they stand a chance of graduating to the first team.
“Mashonaland Eagles will send two teams to each age-group with the rest of the franchises sending a team each,” said Moyo.
The age-group tournaments are part of ZC’s development initiatives and are meant to help select players for national teams.
“Like they say, we need to catch them young. What must be done is to nurture and expose these youngsters to better coaching. We have to start laying the foundation for our national team now. There are a lot of talented youngsters who have a potential of making it to future national teams,” said Moyo.
Some of the emerging cricketers to watch for in the Tuskers Under-19 team are Brian Chari, Farai Murewa and Tawanda Mhora, brother to Tinashe, a former member of the national Under-19 squad that toured Bangladesh last year.

A necessary initiative. Would be interesting to see some results from these tournaments, although that might be rather optimistic.
