Former Northants wicketkeeper Rikki Wessels has tipped Zimbabwean Elton Chigumbura to be a success.

The 24-year-old is joining Northants this week, having captained Zimbabwe in their one-day Tri-Nations series.

Wessels, who played with Chigumbura in Zimbabwe, told BBC Radio Northampton: "He's very talented and he's immense in the field.

"He's a very dangerous bowler to left-handed batsman and he can hit the ball a very long way and very hard."

Chigumbura could make his debut in the Twenty20 match at Leicestershire on Friday.

Wessels was forced to leave Northants in February after the changes to the immigration criteria meant he did not have the necessary working visas, but he says he could still have an involvement with the club.

"I'd love to be out there playing but it didn't go my way," said Wessels.

"I do have a visa but not to play cricket. I could be floating around in a different capacity."

It's a sad story that Rickie Wessels won't be able to play for Northants again this summer. He's a real talent, and it's sad that his county career has ended so abruptly. However, does anybody think he'd consider trying to play for Zimbabwe ?? It's a big chance to play test cricket

He'd need to complete a qualifying period, too - even assuming he got the required number of days in Zim accrued last season, he still wouldn't be available for selection for another 3 years.

Still, if he came back and played every season It'd be sweet
