Cricket club Mashonaland Eagles has added two more foreign players to beef up their squad for the new season which gets underway next month.
NewsDay can exclusively reveal that the Logan Cup defending champions have acquired the signatures of right-handed batsman Charles Edward Shreck and opening batsman Nick Compton.
Both players are currently playing club cricket in England.
Hugo Ribatika, Eagles chief executive officer, confirmed his club had signed the two players to consolidate the team as the gruelling cricket season nears.
“We had some challenges last season with our opening batsmen so we are consolidating that area. We also saw the need to beef up our bowling and we think Shreck can do us a wonderful job. Those additions could put us in a steady position,” said Ribatika.
Shreck is an English professional county all-rounder who has also played first-class cricket in New Zealand. A right-arm fast-medium bowler, he played for Nottinghamshire since 2003, having featured for Cornwall.
Compton (28) established himself in 2006 with a string of some big scores which included five centuries, and was capped by his country in that season.
He was selected to tour with the England A team in Bangladesh in 2006-07. Compton’s highest score in a first-class match stands at 92, a figure he achieved playing against the Bangladesh A team.

Wow the standard for the domestic scene is getting quite strong! Is there a overseas cap, how many overseas players can be picked in one team at any one time?

ZC did say a while back that they were going to introduce one, but I've heard nothing more on it. It does worry me that the franchises are maybe signing too many imports at the moment...Mike wrote: Is there a overseas cap, how many overseas players can be picked in one team at any one time?

Yes its worrying me a bit. I'm all for a lot of overseas players as it will only mean it will improve the standard, but there has to be a limit. Maybe two or three?maehara wrote:ZC did say a while back that they were going to introduce one, but I've heard nothing more on it. On the negative side i believe that Shreck can be rather injury prone, not good for a seamer of course
Really good to see overseas pros being brought in to help the Zim players, that's the only thing that needs to be watched of course, players being brought in to help NOT to take over and leave young Zimbabweans with little chance of playing, a maximum number rule needs to be brought in as soon as possible or consideration on a 6th franchise perhaps

Re: Two More Englishmen for Eagles
I think there should be a limit on players who are not aiming to represent Zimbabwe. Perhaps a quota of three in the starting lineup and five in the wider squad? I don't think starting a sixth franchise to accommodate more overseas players is the solution. If anything we have too many domestic teams, I think four should be the maximum number, with the left over players playing in a stronger more developed club scene.

Hmmm no it's beginning to worry me now this whole situation.
Nick Compton isn't a good player, not a bad by any means, but i don't rate him. He's cockey and arrogent.......I'd much prefer to see Mark Vermuelan in a Franchise. Get the home grown talent in with 2 overseas players in, no more.

Re: Two More Englishmen for Eagles
I guess initially but in its 3rd year 2 overseas players max otherwise they are getting paid for a a holiday while playing cricket in lovely Zimbabwe! We will see MORE come for such holidays, and our youth are deprived of playing time and chance to showcase their skills.
