my name is indeed Andrea which in Italian language (only) is a male name
I was wondering this.
Thought you might have been into some gender bending late night antics.
Yeah... although the tenor Andrea Bocelli is pretty famous, whenever I go abroad I have to explain that Andrea (one of most common names in Italy) is indeed a male name.
Basically in Italian we don't have the female equivalent. Theoretically there is "Andreina" for ladys but very seldom you happen to meet a woman called Andreina.
Once I was in the Philippines and they didn't want to accept my credit card thinking I had stolen it to a girl named Andrea. They couldn't figure out a man holding a credit card with a female name!
However I'm not alone. Other male names in Italian are Simone and Felice, both sound female names in foreign languages.
