He was quite clearly a very good prospect to begin with, what with all the lazy elegance a la Inzy and Mark Waugh. But much like them, had serious issue with his footwork. In fact he rarely moved his feet and depended heavily on hand eye co-ordination. So, he could cash in on the wider ones outside off, but struggled when the deliveries were angled in, at good pace. He has since improved leaps and bounds on that, although, there is still a bit of improvement necesary with respect to the footwork at the beginning of the innings.

A very early question in Photo Quiz thread shows him being squared up with him losing his bat as well in his under 15 days, but we have come a long way since, haven't we? http://zimcricketforums.com/viewtopic.p ... t=30#p4429

Taylor always showed a lot of potential and didn't take long to not look out of his depth - which was very noticeable back in 2004 when Maregwede and Nkala were making the team based on their batting.
It only took four matches for Taylor to make his first 50. Two sub scores two and four before a 38 then 74 versus Sri Lanka in 2004

I probably saw Taylor for the first time on Australia's tour of Zimbabwe in 2004. I don't remember much about that series though, I only vaguely remember Michael Clarke getting a century. I just watched that innings on YouTube to jog my memory. The bowling was so toothless, nobody could get it above 125. Our primary spinner was Matsikenyeri.

I think it was on the 2005 tour of Bangladesh that I first started noticing Taylor - I listened to some of that series live because some Bangladeshi fans put up an audio stream; I only had 56k dial up internet at that time so even if a video stream was available (and I can't remember if they were around back then!) I wouldn't have been able to watch it anyway! My main recollection is of the 2nd Test when Taibu posted a rearguard half-century with support from Chigumbura and Panyangara. Taibu went on to make an unbeaten 153 in the second innings with support from Taylor who got 77.

But it wasn't until 2006 that I really started to follow his performances closely. It was in 2006 that his star potential was clear. His last ball six against Bangladesh convinced me. But even in 2004 and 2005 there were enough good performances to show he was an upcoming talent; I don't know the stats but he was probably our highest performing batsman in that era after Taibu. Half centuries against Australia, a few Test fifties as well... a reasonable start by anyone's standards, especially for an 18 year old in that environement.

Just had a look at that innings, thanks for tipping me off. If anyone else cares for it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCni3clFxFE

Excellent player, young enough, and the right leader for ZIM. If only guys like Ballance, Ervine brothers, and Taibu hadn't been lost...

Another win, another man of the match performance by Taylor.

Honourable mention to Sibanda for being the only other batsman to make the Dutch bowling look as toothless as it was.
