The criteria for a good commentator IMHO
1. You gotta actually know something about the game.
2. No pretentiousness allowed. (sorry Al and Pommie)
3. A bit of humor helps. (Sorry Psyche and Dean)
4. It really helps if the sound of your voice is not like fingernails on chalkboard. (the rest of you grim swines)

So who does that leave...?

Niel and Niel!

Walk away Johnno and Manners, the commentary equivalent of Abbot and Costelo..
Laurel and Hardy..
Starsky and Hutch..
Torville and Deane!

I'm done

A bit OT but my wife and I prefer Kez on the radio for Tests in Aus. That laugh is outstanding.

Kerry O'Keefe, Jemisi? Who can forget those TV ads that were airing around the time of the 2005 Ashes...

By and large, I think all of the Zimbabwean commentators are good. At least the current team anyway... the less said about Pakistan 2008 the better!

Pommie is probably in a class of his own as he is commentating around the world on a regular basis. Campbell is insightful as he gives a broader look at the game; ie. knowing and predicting that Waller would be fine in that NZ run chase. He knows the state of the sport and what's going on domestically which can't be said for most commentators from other countries. Any combination of Viljoen, du Plessis and Campbell is good - they all bounce well off each other. Charumbira looks like he is enjoying himself when he commentates; over time I reckon he'll get better and better.

The only Zim voice in the commentary box was that of Hugo Ribatika, who, among other things, went on to describe the bowling figures of a certain medium pacer called Barry Grunt who was playing for Zim during that time...

Yep, Kerry. His outlook and stories and humour helped get my wife into cricket, now in the summers we listen to him together. Sometimes we turn the tele off and just listen to the radio. Improves the quality of holiday car trips too.
