CRICKET - Onerahi claim club championship

23.03.2009
By Peter Thorley

Unfancied Onerahi-Central made the most of the end of the Northland Club cricket season this weekend by taking the last two premier grade trophies on offer.

The Whangarei club beat Whangarei Boys' High School in the two-day final by four wickets, with the win giving the side the club championship trophy in their inaugural season - and, more importantly, bragging rights over their biggest rivals, City Cricket Club.

"The best thing about it is that City were done out of everything, I mean they thought they were going to win all four competitions and they've got nothing to show for their season now," captain Ross Kneebone said.

"They were a superstar line-up and we are a team of triers who have given 100 per cent and we've come out on top."

Onerahi were the quiet achievers of the competition, picking up three third places and finally a win, in the four premier grade competitions held this season.

"The boys saved their best until the last and fronted up when we really needed it I suppose. We always thought if we could be consistent then we could pick up the major overall trophy," he said.

It was enough to earn them the club championship prize as the best overall team, decided on a points system taking in the results in all of the competitions.

The club's Zimbabwean professional Greg Strydom was the undoubted star of this weekend's match. He took ten wickets in the match, including 7/46 in the first innings and he top-scored in the first innings with 49.

"It was a good team effort all round, but obviously there were a few standout performances," Kneebone said.

"Obviously Greg's bowling was a real bonus, I mean, taking ten wickets in a final is a pretty good effort isn't it? But others came through as well."

He singled out opener Craig Russell's expansive innings of 62 as Onerahi chased 138 to win yesterday afternoon and Harley Dyke's 38 in the same innings.

Getting Strydom back to play next year for the club is already a top priority. "We hope to get him back next season and we're trying to put some sort of deal together now," he said.

The two-day final was dominated by the bowlers, with few batsmen managing to stick around for long as the high school team tried to force a result in the match they had to win.

High School's Ben Hyde top-scored with 52 as the students scored 152 in the first innings and Onerahi were in early trouble before a partnership between Strydom and Kneebone got the team back on track.

Onerahi finished up with a four-run deficit leaving the students to force the pace in their second innings - something they struggled to do with tight bowling, in particular from Strydom, Kneebone and Gareth Blyth.

They were all out too cheaply, leaving Onerahi time to chase down the win and bragging rights.

Some news about the Ervine brothers,Craig and Ryan.

Link: http://www.cricketeurope4.net/DATABASE/ ... 5515.shtml
Meanwhile it's goodbye to long serving opening batsman and wicketkeeper Barry Cooper who has joined CIYMS, and to Ryan Ervine who joins his brother Craig at Lisburn.
Ryan Ervine has left Carrickfergus CC (IRE) this year. He was a player/coach last year there. Now this role is replaced by another Zimbabwean Gavin Ewing.

It is mentioned that Ryan Ervine will join his brother Craig Ervine at Lisburn. That means they both will play for Lisburn CC in UK.

Interesting....Gary Brent will be the professional of Enfield CC for this season in Lancashire league.

It also seems that he has started coaching at Rugby School.

Enfield lose Brent
by Nigel Stockley

DateLine: 22nd January 2009

Enfield have suffered a major setback with the news that Gary Brent will not be their professional for the coming season.

Skipper David Bracewell explained:

" Gary has taken a full time coaching role at Rugby School. He has started coaching locally and was looking forward as a career after cricket. The position was something that he had mentioned to us which was originally going to take effect in September 2009 but a change in their programme has meant him having to start in April. "

" It is obviously a big blow to the club as he was outstanding in the second half of the season both on and off the field and has continued with training during the winter months. Everyone connected with the club wishes him well in his new career. He will still coach the first 4-6 weeks of the indoor nets but then will be leaving us mid March to start his new role."

A good start with the bat by Ryan Higgins. Scored 89 runs in 2 innings at 44.50 with a best score of 88. But he is still to get of the mark in wicket taking.

Friend smashes second century for Town
Published Date: 18 June 2009
By MAURICE TRACE

TRAVIS Friend smashed his second century in two days as Castletown beat Valkyres in the second round of the Standard Bank Tinker Cup on Sunday.

More than 530 runs were scored in 76 overs on a superb batting track at King William's College. Going in first, Town made 353 for the loss of only two wickets. A fine opening stand between Gareth Morris and Mark Williams ended when Morris was caught off the bowling of Abdul Khan for 83. His whirlwind innings included 12 fours.

Friend came in at number three and quickly set about the bowling. With punishing stroke-play, he crashed 117 runs from only 59 balls with no less than 20 fours.

Williams also struck a century and was still there at the end with 128 not out. He had batted 167 minutes and faced 119 balls — a splendid effort which he then built on with a fine wicketkeeping display.

Valkyres lost an early wicket before Shahzaib Rajs and Dave Hopkins steadied the side. When they were out, it was left to skipper Ali Shah to carry on the run chase. He made 57 in 110 minutes before falling to Town skipper Greg Tomlinson.

The side were dismissed for a lively 157 from 36 overs. Andy Sewell, Tom Holdbrook and Tomlinson each took two wickets.

Meanwhile at Tromode Cronkbourne and Ramsey fought a cliff-hanger tie. Opener Max Stokoe led the Douglas side with 31 before he was caught and bowled by Jamie Moffatt. The northern grip tightened when Brian Arnold put down a great spell as, in the course of his eight overs, he took 2 for 10. Adam Peel also took two wickets and Moffatt ended with a creditable 3-28.

Chasing a target of only 126 for victory, Ramsey were rocked by the Stokoe brothers. Max took four wickets and Alex three as the cup holders slumped into deep trouble. Skipper Rob Webber and Ashley Webster then rallied the side with a good stand.

However, when Webster was bowled by Phil Richardson for 27, more wickets fell. The side started the final over with the last pair at the wicket, but with only a few runs needed. In a tense finish, Webber guided his side into the next round, finishing on 25 not out.

A close call for the northerners, but they enter the draw for the semi-finals with Castletown, St John's and the winners of this Sunday's tie between Crosby and Union Mills.

Friday sees one of the highlights of the season – the annual match between the Island and the touring MCC XI.

The Island squad, which is sponsored by Isle of Man Bank, is: Rob Webber, Ollie Webster (Ramsey); Jon Norrington, Nick Hawke, Greg Hawke, Chris Hawke, Danny Hawke (St Johns); Max Stokoe, Alex Stokoe (Cronkbourne); Mark Williams, Garreth Roome (Castletown); Ricky Kniveton, Danny Kniveton (Crosby).

Gareth Dawson is the manager/coach and the match at Tromode starts at 11am.

St John's come under Friend-ly fire
Published Date: 15 June 2009

A GREAT batting display by Travis Friend and Christian Steriopulos gave Castletown a shock Standard Bank Premiership win over St John's on Saturday.

The Saints looked set for victory after making an impressive 272 for 7 from their 50 overs.

Phil Little-Johns had struck an outstanding 95 with Chris Hawke notching 77.

Friend was the best of the Town bowlers with 4 for 42, while Andy Sewell picked up two victims.

Russell Miller claimed an early scalp when the Town batted, but then Steriopulos and Friend came together for a brilliant partnership.

The pair put together a stand of 174 and were within sight of victory when Steriopulos was dismissed for 92. Friend carried on and was unbeaten on 104 as Castletown won by seven wickets with only a few balls left.

League leaders Ramsey showed they are the team to beat when they saw off a fierce challenge from Loaghtyn Rams.

The latter's Simon Beard stroked his way to a graceful 70 for the Rams while brothers Joe and Harry Rothwell each scored 29. Their side finished on 231 for 9 with Ken Harding taking 3 for 41.

In reply Ramsey lost a quick wicket to Gareth Dawson but then Ollie Webster took control. He smashed a blistering 71 not out which contained nine fours and two sixes. Marc Pons-Burt made 56 and Harding 53 to see the northerners home by five wickets.

This was a good performance by Loaghtyn, but Ramsey are building up a good lead at the top of the table.

Cronkbourne are now in second place following their 38-run defeat of Crosby. The Tromode team ended on 258 for 7 with Max Stokoe cracking 94, Nick Keiswetter 47 and Alex Stokoe 33. Glenn Bannister took 4 for 38, while Ross Berry recorded figures of 2 for 46.

The Marown side began the run chase, opener Simon Watson hitting a fine 67 as the game was finely balanced at 104 for 2.

The wickets, however, then began to tumble and Crosby were dismissed for 220. Jack Rowlands and Tudor Baker both hit 26, while Phil Richardson took 3 for 27 and Alex Stokoe returned 3 for 36.
