Spin in Zimbabwe

Post by Terryalderman »

Its interesting looking at the number of spin bowlers appearing internationally and domestically at the moment and was wondering why spin is so popular and has it always been. Is the style of pitches or coaching?
Its also good to see the different varieties on show with Cremer bowling leggies, Price left arm orthodox and Utseya offies. Its exctiting watching the progress of Cremer. What are his strengths; accuracy, big turner or variety?
Every time you see a big haul in the domestic games it seems its a spinner doing the damage, especailly Maruma and now young Higgins. What does Dion Ebrahim bowl? and why hasn't Gavin Ewing taken more wickets?
Who would be the best young pace bowlers domestically and which pace bowler has taken the most domestic wickets?
Enjoying watching the devolpment of Zim cricket over the past couple of wickets, hopefully more old faces return.

Hey Terry nice to see you on the forums again, ill try and answer your question as well as i can
Its interesting looking at the number of spin bowlers appearing internationally and domestically at the moment and was wondering why spin is so popular and has it always been. Is the style of pitches or coaching?
I think its mainly down to the pitches and to be honest the fact that Zimbabwe batsman are not the best players of spin as proven in the current series in Bangaldesh which has meant spin bowlers have been sucessfull at domestic level. Im not really sure if there is a particular spin coach in Zimbabwe.
Its exctiting watching the progress of Cremer. What are his strengths; accuracy, big turner or variety?
Cremer is a bowler who has realy come on well in the last yaer. He is an attacking leg spinner who generates good turn and i prepared to flight the ball and has a very good googley which he dissimed Tamim iqbal with on saturday. He can sometimes go for runs but he is a natual wicket taker and is the most attacking of our spin trio. The ball he got Rahim with on saturday was a realy good top spinner which shows us he has al the tools in the locker but as his career develops he will only get better. Also has talant with the bat.
very time you see a big haul in the domestic games it seems its a spinner doing the damage, especailly Maruma and now young Higgins. What does Dion Ebrahim bowl? and why hasn't Gavin Ewing taken more wickets?
There are no shortage of spinners in Zimbabwe with Maruma who is really pushing hard for the national team and is a excellent all round cricketer as is HIggins but i have my doubts about if he will stay in Zimbabwe cricket after he finishes school. Gavin Ewing has only played a couple of games so far as he has been suffering a hamstring injury, he hasnt bowled much so far this season and to be honest he is not really a front line spinner but a good allrounder and John Nyumbu has been taking wickets consistantly over the last two years. Dion Ebrahim bowls off spin on a very part time basis.
Who would be the best young pace bowlers domestically and which pace bowler has taken the most domestic wickets?
This is the problem im afriad, the best young bowlers would be Admire Manyumwa, Shringai Masakadza, Njabulo Ncube.
