Nothing sheepish about Lamb’

MASHONALAND Eagles’ captain Greg Lamb hopes to grab the attention of national team selectors with good performances for his franchise in domestic cricket competitions.

Lamb has been doing well with both bat and ball for Eagles since he returned from England this year. In the Logan Cup he has scored 381 runs at an average of 31,28 in four matches and his high score was an unbeaten 94 against Matabeleland Tuskers.

Lamb led his side to a six-wicket victory over Mountaineers at Mutare Sports Club in a Logan Cup game that ended last Thursday.

In the match, Lamb followed up his first innings score of 85 with a polished 77 not out off 110 balls to help the Eagles maintain their top spot on the Logan Cup log standings.

In the Faithwear Metbank Cup, Lamb has scored 152 runs at an average of 50,66 and his best was a 67 not out against Southern Rocks.

“I am willing to play cricket for Zimbabwe, but it is up to the selectors. I just have to keep scoring more runs for my team,” Lamb told Standardsport.

At Eagles, Lamb is enjoying his game and has been one of their most consistent performers.
“I have played cricket all my life and I am looking forward to the challenge that comes with it,” he said.
“I would like to push the Eagles to greater heights because we are a bunch of good boys all dedicated and doing all our best in training.
“We aim to win the four-day championship (Logan Cup) and that would be very nice. We need to improve in the ODI competition (Faithwear Metbank Cup) and I am glad we managed to win our first match when we beat Tuskers last month in Bulawayo.”

After spending five successful seasons with county cricket club Hampshire in England, Lamb was released from his contract last year.

The 28-year-old right-hander decided to return to Zimbabwe to share the knowledge he gained in England with local cricketers and was snapped up by the Harare based franchise.

“They did not want me anymore and in the end I decided to return to Zimbabwe because this is where I learned to play cricket,” he said.

“I also came back to help develop the domestic game and overall to play cricket for Zimbabwe. I played cricket in England at the highest level for many years and I am one of the few guys who has played first class cricket consistently.”

The Zimbabwean helped the Southampton-based county side to lift the 2005 Friends Provident Trophy, which was then known as the C&G Trophy.

The Friends Provident Trophy is the premier limited overs competition in England involving 18 county sides.

Lamb is glad that local cricket has moved from the dark days that had been prevailing in the last five years caused by squabbles between Zimbabwe Cricket and former players.

“It is starting to come around right now and the people involved have shown that they truly love the sport,” he said.
“They have put the game first before personal interests.”

Greg Lamb was the Stand-in captain for the Eagles. The Eagles Captain is none other then Elton "Elty" Chigumbura. That aside I think Greg Lamb has really come to the fore of late and he should be getting his call up soon. I hope his experience will count for something when the time comes.
