Sean Williams back for Tuskers
Senior Sports Reporter
MATABELELAND Tuskers have been given a boost ahead of their Logan Cup clash against Mountaineers starting at Mutare Sports Club on Wednesday with the recovery of top order batsman Sean Williams
.
The left-handed batsman pulled a hamstring while turning out for the Zimbabwe senior national team against Kenya last month at Harare Sports Club. He went on to miss Zimbabwe’s tour of Bangladesh and South Africa.
Williams has fully recovered from the injury, trained with the team last week and has been drafted into the 13-member squad making the trip to the Eastern Highlands.
Williams’s recovery has now given Matabeleland Tuskers coach Robin Brown a headache on settling for the starting line-up.
Another left-hander Terrence Duffin suffered a back injury just before the start of Tuskers’ home match against Midwest Rhinos, which ended in a draw. Duffin’s replacement in that match Gavin Ewing scored a half-century playing in an unfamiliar opening position and is unlikely to be dropped.
National team batsman Mark Vermuelen who reacted angrily after being dismissed for a first ball duck by leg spinner Graeme Cremer and left handed all-rounder Keith Dabengwa are the likely candidates for the chop.
Mbekezeli Mabuza, who has also fully recovered from injures he sustained in a road accident in August could play his first match for Tuskers this season.
Bonaparte Mujuru, Dion Ebrahim, Charles Coventry and Gregory Strydom are most likely to keep their spots in the batting line-up.
No changes are expected in the bowling department, which should be led by pace bowlers Christopher Mpofu, Tawanda Mupariwa, Keegan Meth and off spinner John Nyumbu.
Tuskers who had tasted victory only once were unfortunate not to win their last match against Midwest Rhinos. A century from Coventry saw Tuskers post 418 runs in their first innings and some brilliant bowling by Mpofu and Meth saw Midwest Rhinos being forced to follow on.
Bad weather saw Midwest Rhinos escaping with a draw and deny Tuskers their second win in the country’s premier first class competition.
Matabeleland Tuskers squad: Gregory Strydom (captain), Charles Coventry (wicketkeeper), Bonaparte Mujuru, Sean Williams, Keith Dabengwa, Gavin Ewing, Dion Ebrahim, Mark Vermeulen, Keegan Meth, Tawanda Mupariwa, Christopher Mpofu, John Nyumbu, Mbekezeli Mabuza.

Re: Sean Williams back for Tuskers
This is good news about Williams. With the top order exposed as badly as in Bangla and SA tours, we need his class badly. Great to hear about the complete recovery of Mabuza too.
Vermeulen's situation is scary. They obviously could not brush it under the carpet.
