In a bid to spread the game to all parts of the country and to our counterparts in foreign land, ZC will be regularly doing Shona and Ndebele updates, commentry, reviews and appreciation on Studio and some of our local radio stations. You stand a chance of winning signed National team regalia, season tickets and Christmans hampers if you assist in coming up with either Ndebele or Shona names for 6of the following cricket terms.
1. Wicket
2. Runs
3. Batsman
4.Bowler
5.LBW
6.Innings
7.Over
8. Stumps
9. A bat
10. Boundary
There is a game we used to play when were kids called "Hwishu" (this is Shona losely translated this means "Miss" in english). Basically, you have two teams (numbers not limited but even, if you feel one team as an unfair advantage than the other then the weaker side can have an additional player). Its very similar to cricket only you used your feet and a bigger ball (normally made from plastic bags). The playing area consist of two big circles ten to fifteen feet apart with one big line down the middle. Dont remember if there was a boundary but I dont think kids would be able to kick the the ball very far anyway.

Basically you have one team's "Bowler" tossing the ball (under arm) from the circle the one end and the other team's "kicker" (one at a time) in the circle on the other end. The rest is basically cricket you accumulate runs and whoever has the highest number of runs after each "innings" wins. You make runs by kicking the ball as far as you can and running from one circle to the other.

How out:
1. If you kick the ball into the air and its punched down by the fielding team's fielder - Out!!!
2. If you hit by the ball short of reaching the circle on the other end - Out!!!! (run out, I guess)
- if you reach the one end and beside you dont want to make a second run you call out "bye". That way you can move back to your mark safely
3. If you missed the ball tossed by the bowler - Out!!!!(Hence the term "Hwishu")

This game is basically cricket. Only I cant remember a single word of the Terms we used to use!
