Elton Chigumbura is being marginalised

Post by watermelon »

Elton Chigumbura is being treated like garbage by captain Cremer and coach Streak. They are refusing to let him bowl and keeping him from batting higher up the order where he has a chance to succeed. I believe Cremer and Streak are running an active campaign to tarnish the legacy of Chigumbura, much like another former captain, Propser Utseya had his reputation tarnished by white administration and players. Utseya, perhaps our most successful player since the white rebellion, was reduced to a bit-part player and given no choice but to speak out publicly against the racist Alistair Campbell. My sources tell me that with Utseya gone, Chigumbura is the next veteran to be sent into exile "in disgrace."

So you mean to tell the forum that Chigumbura has been unable to score runs because of Cremer and Streak.

Ok so Cremer has been responsible for Chigumbura's batting failures.

I think your recent post is a clear indication that you need to get your head checked, clearly their are psychotic features manifesting .

You are crazy watermelon,Unopenga wangu!

Utseya was doing fine until his bowling action was reported by the ICC and then banned. He had his opportunities following his ban but couldn't take enough wickets to justify his spot.

That is crap, he was hardly given a chance at all. He was selected in squads and then not given any game time, simply to humiliate him and to also prevent him from playing club/domestic cricket where he could have proven his abilities. The best way to bury a player is select him in a national squad and then get them to carry drinks, or in Chigumbura's case select him and turn him into a specialist tailender.

I offer these statistics.
Chigumbura has not past 50 in his last 21 ODIs, 16 of which he was captain & all 16 against either Ireland, Bangladesh or Afghanistan. Certainly just prior to this, as captain & batting at 4, he peaked with 2 centuries in 2015. But if you are only as good as your last performance, as captain against Afghanistan, Chigumbura batted at 5 & scored 3 in 19 balls in a 2 wicket loss.
He has played 201 ODIs for Zimbabwe & batted at 4 13 times, at 5 33 times, at 6 55 times & at 7 74 times. He was captain in 62 ODIs. So even if he batted at 4 & 5 all during his captaincy (I've not done an analysis of this), he still felt compelled to bat at 6 or lower for 25% of his captaincy. He batted at 6 this match just past.

Regarding his bowling, you'll love this.
Chigumbura has bowled 694 overs in 201 ODIs for Zimbabwe. He has 95 wickets at 42.70 at 5.84rpo
As captain, he has bowled 94 overs in 62 ODIs for Zimbabwe. He has 8 wickets at 80.12 at 6.81rpo
Which means he has bowled 600 overs in 139 ODIs for Zimbabwe. He has 87 wickets at 39.26 at 5.69rpo.
I think this means Chigumbura, the captain marginalised Chigumbura, the bowler.

Of all the Zimbabwean cricketers in this tragic period 2003-16, I've always felt Chigumbura was the most talented & looked to as the most likely to succeed. Retrospectively, given the captaincy in his mid-twenties seemed to be a burden too much to bear. I can only wonder how much the politics beyond the field affected him.
These stats can be accessed at statsguru on cricinfo. They are offered by me without prejudice.

And this stat is offered by me:

In ODIs where Utseya is captain Chigumbura's bowling average is 32.03 as compared to 42.31 for his career. Utseya clearly backed Chigumbura and knew how to use him, Cremer has thus far refused to bowl Elton so we have no comparison there, but can only speculate as to the reasons for his shunning and the level of Streak's involvement in this conspiracy.

But Utseya used Chigumbura when he was young (20-24 years of age), probably brash, full of promise. Not weighed down by captaincy. And probably enjoying his cricket ready to make his mark in the world.
But something happened!
For crying out loud, Chigumbura led Zimbabwe aged 24-25, to the 2010/11 World Cup & in 6 matches, he bowled 8 wicketless overs. The man didn't back himself! Now, Utseya & Taibu were part of this campaign. And you are the dude who communicates with Taibu, as you have told us. So find out for the forum, what happened to Chigumbura? What was he thinking? What hindrances was he encountering? Why did he doubt himself?
And whatever happened, it lasted 5-6 years & 62ODIs.
Hardly something to inspire.

Chigumbura was dealing with injuries back when he was captain. Anyway the period of time I am talking about is now! He is being relegated to a specialist tailender by Cremer and Streak. If Zimbabwe really wanted Chigumbura to get back to form they would be giving him more opportunities or at least send him to the BPL!

Communicate with Taibu I will, I just hope he hasn't fallen under Streak's thumb!

He batted @7 and chose not to bowl himself when he was captain and under every coach who has coached Zimbabwe, you can't Blame Streak for that .....

Whatever Chigumbura achieved, and he did achieve a lot at times, it was in the past, he has no place in either the Test or ODI sides any longer, his performances are embarassing and he should be replaced by someone like Musakanda who has something to offer the Zim future

As usual watermelon talks through his backside, the captain that destroyed Chigumbura as a player was Chigumbura himself and no amount of ridiculous racist shouting or finger pointing will change that fact
