There aren't many good batsman running around on the first class scene for Australia at the moment and Cartwright averages 50 in First class cricket so he's right up the top of contenders for a middle order Test spot.

As for him opening in ODI's I have no idea what the selectors are thinking, he hasn't set the world on fire in List A matches and is a middle order batsman not an opener. Really odd for Australia to pick a guy who averages 24 for the ODI side, although they have in the past picked guys who have done well in Sheffield Shield Cricket for the ODI side for some reason e.g. Peter Forrest.

Yeah, he did not look like he belonged there. Was a painful struggle.

1 off 15 opening the batting, and then playing a club cricketers shot to get out. Very average

Right, with Aussies in such doldrums of late, why have they not gone back to Hilton Cartwright at all? How far has he slipped in the pecking order? Surely he's worth another go at this point?

Poor old Hilton can't make a run this summer, but he's back bowling and has taken 4 wickets this match for WA

He’s had to deal with a constant change in the Order as well . Pretty sure he opened for a few games then has been at 3 All the way to number 6 . He is a talented lad but this was when he could of pushed for a long term spot in the Aussie team , sadly there’s better talent out there .his bowling is barely club standard haha congrats to him
For this game though

Hilton Cartwright 69, shines for Western Australia with 8 fours and 3 sixes against South Australia in the Sheffield Shield

Ideal time for him, some good performances can give him get back the baggy green in that struggling Aussie middle order in the upcomming Ashes series

Would be a good time now to entice Hilton back to his country of birth. The West Australian should look at what Murray Goodwin did years ago with great success. Would be a huge asset to Zim cricket in all formats.
