[News] ZRS Face some of the Kiwis CT Reserves

Post by tawac »

Mixed week but Rising Stars bounce back with big win!

An early start on Tuesday saw the squad make their way to another picturesque location – the village of Desborough in Northants – for the 50 over encounter. The five Kiwi internationals – Ish Sodhi, Colin Munro, Henry Nicholls, Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson – were all warming up and in the starting XI!

After choosing to bowl first, Carl Mumba removed Kiwi opener Munro, who was looking dangerous, for 21. However, Henry Nicholls took up the challenge and hit 114 at almost a run a ball. Along with contributions from Northants players Charlie Home and Tom Sole, the county side reached 295 for 8 from their 50 overs. The Rising Stars’ two international bowlers, Mumba and Richard Ngarava, took five wickets between them, finishing with 3-54 and 2-61 respectively.

After the lunch break openers Tinashe Kamunhukamwe and Tafara Mupariwa were up against the serious pace of Lockie Ferguson, who is clocked regularly at 90mph plus. Ferguson’s speed was a problem for all of the tourist’s top order and Mupariwa was the first to suffer, bowled without scoring. Tarisai Musakanda was trapped lbw second ball and Kamunhukamwe edged to slip for 6.

Ryan Burl, who was suffering from flu, kept out Ferguson and fellow speedster Matt Henry for half an hour, but he also departed lbw for just 5, leaving the team precariously balanced at 19 for 4. To make matters worse, Henry then got in on the act by removing Tsiga for 2. However, Faraz Akram and Brandon Mavuta survived for long enough to make 18 and 17 respectively. There were also contributions down the order from Blessing Muzarabani, who struck the ball cleanly and ended 19 not out, and Richard Ngarava (19), but the damage had been done early on and the Rising Stars were dismissed for 98.

Seeking to make amends the following evening, the tourists took on the Karachi Kites in their Wednesday Greater Manchester League fixture. Like most of their opponents in this league, the Kites had some very accomplished players. In the bowling department, they stuck mainly to spin, which kept the run rate in check for most of the 25 overs and restricted the Rising Stars to 156. The main contribution was from Tinashe Kamunhukamwe, who made 53, while Brandon Mavuta added 28 not out towards the end.

Sadly the total proved just short as the Kites demonstrated some excellent power hitting, with contributions from Usmani (30*), Wajahuddin (29) and Shah (27), getting them over the line in the penultimate over. Mkhululi Nyathi was the pick of the bowlers with his 4-31.

But the Rising Stars bounced back on Thursday with an excellent victory over a well-drilled Future Stars Academy, led by former county professional David Alleyne. Batting first, the tourists innings got off to a blistering start, despite a run out for Thamsanqa Nunu early on. Tarisai Musakanda blasted 50 from 30 balls and with Kamunhukamwe and Tsiga scoring 27 and 33 respectively, a high total was on the cards. However, a mid-innings wobble saw them slip to 154 for 7, before captain Brandon Mavuta and Mkhululi Nyathi staged a remarkable comeback. Nyathi, noted more for his bowling, launched a series of big hits as he amassed 47 from just 32 balls, including three sixes. Mavuta was more circumspect, although his 31 was a valuable innings which supported the tail.

Chasing 242 to win, the Future Stars lost an early wicket as Cotter was caught behind off Richard Ngarava for 6. Number three batter Powe looked good for his 47 before he became the first of four victims for leg-spinner Mavuta. Kuzivi Ziwira was also bowling an accurate line and he picked up 2 for 22. Left arm spinner Rugare Magarira again bowled accurately and was rewarded with two wickets, while off-spinner Nunu also bowled nicely for his 1-27. An impressive all-round bowling and fielding display ensured the opposition could only reach 157 all out, leaving the Rising Stars victorious by 85 runs.

Highlights of this match and the scorecard can be accessed here.

This week is a quieter one for the Rising Stars, as they only have their Wednesday league fixture to look forward, following the cancellation of the LDCC representative fixture.

CHRISTOPHER MPOFU: 'The problem was fear of failure. I used to think that when I played, if I didn't do well in one game, I would lose my place for the next one but now I've let go of that'
