Taylor, Jarvis in Zimbabwe squad for West Indies Tests
Brendan Taylor and Kyle Jarvis, both back to the Zimbabwe fold after county stints, have been included in the Test squad for the two-match series against West Indies starting on Saturday in Bulawayo. Solomon Mire, the Australian-based allrounder who is also in the 16-member squad, is in line to make his Test debut.

Zimbabwe have made seven changes to the squad that last played a Test, in Sri Lanka in July, with no space for Ryan Burl, Tendai Chatara, Tarisai Musakanda, Carl Mumba, Natsai Mushangwe, Nathan Waller and Donald Tiripano. Of these, Chatara is the only one missing out due to injury.

Wicketkeeper Nyasha Mayavo and left-armer Tendai Chisoro are the other uncapped players in the squad. However, Mayavo could miss out to regular gloveman Regis Chakabva and Chisoro may have to battle for his place alongside veterans Chris Mpofu, the returning Jarvis and Michael Chinouya, who wasn't part of the Test squad in Sri Lanka. Chamu Chibhabha, also not part of the Sri Lanka squad, has been included.

The new-look squad heralds the start of a new era in Zimbabwe cricket, with the board having actively sought the return of players who left seeking financial stability elsewhere. With a more secure governance structure in place under new managing director Faisal Hasnain, convener of selectors Tatenda Taibu has been able to convince Taylor, Jarvis and Mire to return.

While Jarvis is certain to open the bowling and add much-needed pace, swing and aggression to a usually pedestrian Zimbabwe attack, Taylor and Mire will slot into a line-up that is taking on a more solid appearance. Hamilton Masakadza, Craig Ervine, Sean Williams, PJ Moor and Sikandar Raza have all recently scored Test centuries, adding to Zimbabwe's new-found confidence.

Though Zimbabwe's main aim over the next few months is to work towards 2019 World Cup qualification, they are also seeking to play more Tests, more so now following the addition of two new Full Members in Ireland and Afghanistan.

Apart from hosting West Indies, they are also slated to travel to South Africa for the inaugural four-day Test, which will also be played under lights, in December. There is also talk of a series against Afghanistan, possibly in the UAE, before they host the World Cup qualifiers in March.

Zimbabwe last won a Test more than four years ago, against Pakistan in Harare. They have since lost nine Tests: five at home, three in Bangladesh and one in Sri Lanka.
It's clearer now:
Mire
Hami
Craig
Sean
Moor
Raza
Chakabva(wk)
Cremer
Jarvis
Mpofu
Chinouya

Maybe some guys were right about Chinouya an Mire.

The only possible change I see now is Chamu opening with Hami, while Chinouya falls away and Mire plays down the order.

Don't see Chamu missing out in the first match. He does negotiate pace well so Im sure he will open with Hammy. Waller has been doing well in the lower order don't see him missing out as well. Perhaps Mire will only can a look in in the second game if one of these guys doesn't perform.

I think Firdose Moonda's speculation is no better than ours. I suspect she reports on Zim cricket because she has to, not because she likes to.

How good is Mire's bowling? cause honestly if he is in as a batsman, its pretty much his batting vs Chamu, and their bowling as well. Otherwise No point in having Chamu and Mire in the same test team.

Avoiding the 8-3 balance is how we end up with Chakabva opening.

I can't see Waller missing out. He just scored a ton.

Looks like they really are going to play Mire. I have my doubts but hopefully he can prove me wrong.

Masakadza
Mire
Ervine
Taylor
Williams
Raza
Waller
Chakabva
Cremer
Jarvis
Mpofu
Hamilton Masakadza, Craig Ervine, Sean Williams, PJ Moor and Sikandar Raza have all recently scored Test centuries
When was the last time Masakadza scored a Test century? PJ Moor?

Masakadza
Chibhabha (Mire)
Ervine
Taylor
Williams
Raza
Chakabva
Cremer
Jarvis
Mpofu
Chinouya

That's the team (from this squad) that I would like to see. I would go for Chibhabha, but I think they will go for Mire.

I don't like:
- A batsman at 8. Need to take 20 wickets. Need 3 specialist seamers. Chakabva (or Moor) is good enough to bat 7. Cremer is good enough to bat 8.
- Chisoro. Very poor FC record. Poor warm up game. I don't feel that this bloke is a good option as a test spinner. I don't see what his bowling offers that Williams and Raza don't. Not averse to having 2 specialist spinner, just don't think Chisoro is the one.

Strong batting line up if Mire does open and Cremer coming in at number 9.

But I'm already cringing at the amount of boundaries they'll take off us
