The main issue stems from the broadcasting deal

In simple terms Cricket is a business and playing cricket is the product doesn't matter about anything else but until ZC are able to sell 'the product' for a decent price things will be tough and they will have to rely on the ICC grants.

Once a decent Broadcasting rights deal is in place everything will flow from that like sponsors, marketing and partnerships.

I'm not sure there is a big enough market attraction for Zimbabwe cricket to get a better deal but as the article states the deal won't be up until 2019 so until then not much can be done.

It's very simple until ZC can make a profit from their 'product' which is the game and selling they will always struggle.

At least now with the ICC in charge we don't have to worry about PC & OB stealing all the cash

There are common sense solutions but I am sure greedy boards wouldn't like that for whatever reason.

Apart from the Big 3 boards, no other board is financially viable. The PCB and the BCB get by on a combination of playing the Big 3 and their own massive fanbases driving their T20 leagues. The other 5 boards rely almost solely on inbound Big 3 tours and hence are always close to being financially broke at all times.

Maybe the answer is for Zim to host one marquee Test match each year (alternate between HSC and Queens), and try and play 2-3 away games each year as well. The crowd numbers at Bulawayo were pretty depressing, maybe the only way for Test cricket to survive in Zimbabwe is to make it an event.

what's clear here is that we will be in big trouble if we don't get that world cup money.

In the end the big 3 are selfish. the current revenue sharing model will never lead to the growth of the game. the english premier league is an example of what can happen if you have an equal revenue sharing model. more money will eventually come because you create a more equal and entertaining environment.

a situation where everybody gets the same base money and everybody plays the same number of games across all formats will lead to huge growth in the long run I think. cricket is almost like the Spanish league where Barcelona and Real Madrid are like the cricket big 3 and everybody else is just the best of the rest. top quality at the top teams but the minnows like us barely get by. it makes it difficult to attract new fans.. having 3 boards out of 12 which can completely rely on themselves financially is pathetic.

I think they get huge support from their local and diaspora communities. even though if you tell me it costs 1 million dollars to host 2 tests I don't know if they will be able to host many even if it is in the UAE. maybe at first it will be ok but after a while donors get tired.
