Mugabe isn't going to survive this.. he is just delaying the inevitable.. impeachment loading. Mphoko is not going to risk his life coming back to Zim when the army is in control. worst part about this for him is that he just might have sacrificed his family's future with what he did. if he doesn't resign and he gets impeached then there is no comfortable exit where he gets to keep his freedom and money

It seems to me like Mugabe was offered the chance to go quietly, but he intends to fight on instead. Negotiations would surely be easier if Grace was completely out of the picture.

I would be saying to him that if he goes in the next 48 hrs he goes with a bit of cash and dignity, but if he waits, he is out on the street with nothing or will face prosecution.

If he still wants to fight on then let him.

Pariah hates Mugabe though - he has said as much on this forum. Someone has obviously hacked pariah's account in last few days. I am sure the real pariah is rejoicing in Mugabe's demise.

There’s no doubt that speech was prepared for him by the military. They didn’t look upset about no mention of resignation at all. I heard that the delays were due to Mugabe not wanting to read it. He’s effectively cleared their actions. They’re leading him along to try and legitimize the take over, which so far from a legal perspective has been questionable. It must be making Mugabe seethe that the students have become the masters and have learnt well. The real issue which is being widely discussed this morning is that if it goes the impeachment route then Zanu needs MDC’s help. This would be a huge bonus because the military being touted as the impartial guardians of our constitution and our saviours is not correct. Mutsvanga has played his hand well and re-established the war vets within government. He’s an articulate forceful man and I’m not denigrating the sacrifices people made but when the electorate mature enough to realize the lack of relevance of this then we will have turned a corner, but we’re another generation away from that. Neither Zanu nor the war vets have safe guarded the core principles they fought for, they’ve used their positions to entrench and enrich themselves and tossed the expectant population the odd damaging bone in the pre-election periods.
Life in politics can be brutal- politicians getting cheered and revered one day are booed and hissed by their peers the next. It’s shameless and disheartening that the bulk of our elected politicians will run with the hares and hunt with the hounds for a few worthless bond notes. We need people with integrity and vision, not scared spineless yes men. Maybe when Mugabe goes they will do what’s right, it’s never too late.

Mugabe is a Zimbabwean. He is capable of sitting and saying nothing for a long time. He favours sitting quietly whilst 'negotiations' are carried on in front of him. He will wait as long as possible for people to bend to his will.

The problem for him is that the people have tired of waiting. There is no more largess to spread through the old patronage system.

So naïve Googly. So naïve!

Why didn't the soldiers just step aside and let you MDC supporters storm his residence and violently force him to resign or kill him if he refuses? Why did they "guide' your march? I thought you said you were gatvol and the army had given you guys balls?

Make no mistake, Mugabe will never appoint Mnangagwa as president. He will also not resign. Between now and ZANU Congress and national elections is a very long time. So what then?

Lot's of time for betrayals, kill momentum and most importantly mistakes.

Army now at each other's throats, Mugabe still President but it's them putting him under house arrest and calling all the shits. They took down Finave Minister and other key Ministers. The only people the soldiers can now blame are their generals. Wait until they don't receive their salaries. Whom will they blame? The same " President" and "Finance Minister" they have under control???

The moment they say Mugabe is responsible is the moment they acknowledge Mugabe's authority to fire them without resistance.

This is checkmate.

AU and SADC are just waiting for the slightest hint to acknowledge a coup or exertion of violent force and resistance to a sitting head of state. Then ZIM is automatically expelled.

Once ZIM is expelled from those two bodies you Zimbabweans are all on your own.

How long will the Generals (or their "subordinates") continue to tread carefully?

What you say makes no sense TapsC. So why doesn't Mphoko just simply resign and get on with his life?

Joint Operations Command controls the purse strings and all key economy sectors farming, mining etc. They were running patronage systems not Mugabe.

Mugabe is innocent and detached from the patronage system Hhm?

Checkmate in which direction? Do you support Grace ascending the throne?

You seem to be hurling may words as usual but failing to manage anything of value.

Why didn't the people storm the palace?

Because they are peace loving and it would be nice to let the old man go in peace rather than stringing him up Libya style.

Mugabe's best move is to sit tight and await the faux coup to unravel as you seem desperate for.

However the people are tired and sick of his misrule and very unwilling for Grace to continue her profligacy.

Do you want to see them both strung up?
