Zimbabwe Under-19s World Cup Squad

Post by totoro »

Zimbabwe Cricket Official’s squad for the ICC - International Cricket Council Under-19 Cricket World Cup 2018 has been announced.
The limited-overs tournament is scheduled to be held in New Zealand from 13 January to 3 February 2018.
Zimbabwe Under-19 head coach Stephen Mangongo unveiled his 15-man squad, captained by Liam Roche, at a press conference held at Harare Sports Club today.
Five non-travelling reserves were also named.
Mangongo said the final squad was selected following a rigorous two-year programme that included trials, several training camps and tours to Malaysia, Namibia, South Africa, Australia and India by the youth side.
“The boys have had a long journey which started with 88 boys from the 10 provinces and the two-year programme has been very intense and rigorous,” he said.
“It is an honour to have worked with such kind of boys who cherish and have a dream to eventually represent their nation at the highest level.
“These boys are living a dream and hopefully in a few years’ time, or a few months’ time, we will see some of them graduating into higher levels of cricket.”
Mangongo expressed his gratitude to Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) for giving him the resources he requested to ensure the team would be well prepared for the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup tournament.
“As the coach, I would like to thank ZC because this had never happened that an Under-19 side goes through such rigorous preparations,” he said.
Zimbabwe finished 10th at the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup 2016 in Bangladesh, but Mangongo is confident his charges will do much better this time round.
“We are definitely looking to ensure we keep improving because these boys eventually must take Zimbabwe to the promised land. It’s not an option for us to go backwards,” he said.

Well, Mazhawidza does not make the final 15! Hope it is not to do with picking up a fight with Mangongo, and hope the ones picked ahead of him are indeed in better form than him.

Tough group awaits. Best wishes to the team and Mangongo. They have worked hard in the last couple of years as he says.

Hope Mazhawidza makes it to the rising stars squad this year, to make up for this snub.

Zimbabwe Under 19 players are least prepared out of the under 19 sides of top 8 test playing nation. Nearly, all the under 19 probables of top 8 test playing nations are preparing hard, as they are drafted into the domestic cricket, where they face some quality cricket from the seniors.

Except Shumba, none of the players have got experience to face quality bowlers or bowl at quality batsman.

They should have made every effort to get Booth from Hilton into this side. Unfortunately he’s in the Natal side so may not be interested. There are unrealistic aspirations of white South African schoolboys and their parents though. The likelihood of them making a franchise side are slim to zero and Zim is a much better option. I’m yet to see him in person, but he’s making big waves in a big pond and one of my mates phoned me about him, which is unusual. Clearly he’s very good.
I agree that Robinson was not a good choice. He’s ok, but there are better players out there. Young Shardendorf is better and has a lot more potential.

it definitely must have to do with their squabble. he was praising the kid for bowling around the 135kph mark already. now the kid is a reserve.. this is why we shouldn't merge the u19s and the rising stars staff and admin. we need different minds at different levels
