[Series Thread]: 2018 ICC World Cup Qualifier | Non-Zim Matches

Post by Kriterion_BD »

Very excited about this tourney. I've always been inordinately fascinated by Associate cricket and in particular I'm rooting for Nepal and PNG who have native teams and will get a chance to play on TV for the first time should they make the Supers. Of course, I'm an Afghan fan, but they have had so much success recently that a subpar performance would be good. Still want them to get 1 of the WC berths. As for the other berth, I can't decide which team I would like to see, although Nepal seems the obvious choice.

Looking at the teams based on rank order, here are my predictions:

9) West Indies - they will lose a couple of games, will it be enough damage to knock them out of the WC? My prediction is they will just scrape in somehow.

10) Afghanistan - one of the favorites given their form and confidence over the past several years. But their batting is weak, like most of the teams here. They have the mental strength to win in clutch situations so in a do or die situation, they will most likely prevail.

11) Zimbabwe - arguably the strongest side in the tourney on paper and well balanced too. But they're ranked 3rd due mostly to lack of mental strength and habitual repitition of old mistakes.

12) Ireland - better form than their rank. Like the Afghans they thrive under pressure so qualification would not be a surprise despite their lowly rank.

13 & 14) Netherlands and Scotland - outsiders, but they will upset at least a couple of the above teams.

The other 4 teams don't really have a shot at the WC, but do have a good opportunity to gain ODI status.

I really hope Nepal get ODI status I have a feeling they’ll use it more than what PNG, UAE & Hong Kong did.

Some people don’t like playing associates like the above mentioned but I like it as it’s a good chance to see our boys get some runs, wickets and victories. Although scoring 100 or taking 5 wickets against Nepal the oils they be the same as doing it against India it’s still good to see our guys do well for a change.

UAE, Hong Kong, Oman are complete wastes of time - and more importantly money if you ask me. Not one person in those countries cares about cricket. Not one player has even a remote tie to those countries. The same standard won't apply to USA and Canada since they are countries made up of immigrants (well I guess UAE and Oman can also claim that tag). Actually nevermind, yes that standard should also apply to the US and Canada...but since I'm an American who also lived in Canada - I still support both of those teams and hope they get ODI status or qualify for a World Cup one day in my lifetime.

As for Nepal, they have serious potential to be the next Afghanistan, who many are predicting to already be the next Bangladesh, who in turn could one day be the next Pakistan. #AsianPower

I'm all about growing the game. I hope we can get at least 16 competitive teams in the next 5 years. If Nepal has the fan base then they should get support from the ICC. If they really do have bumper crowds then there is money to made. If I was ZC I would even do a partnership with them and send an A team there for a full tour and then split the profits from their local TV networks and match tickets. Could raise some money for our A team that way.

Thats actually a very innovative idea, Taps. I like it. Quid pro quo. Nepal gets to benefit cricketing wise against a decent side (provided ZIM A is stronger than NEP A) and ZC could get some money out of it.

The financial trouble of Test cricket really has a simple if socialist answer. Pool the revenue and then allocate so that all profit. If we just let the market decide then India has to play everyone equally. But if we use the money of the Ashes to fund/subsidize a Nepal vs ZIM series, a greater number of people benefit vs the first system. Is that so hard to understand? I think the present ICC allocation of global funds with India getting 25%, England getting 18%, and everyone else getting around 7% (aprox) makes sense to me.

Its like the American gun problem. The answer is so obvious that we can't figure out to follow the footsteps of every other civilized nation who doesn't have that problem (the enlightened nation of Yemen of course leading us in guns available per capita :D).

Scotland have very easily negated the threat of Rashid Khan by taking the best approach possible..

Hope Zimbabwe can learn a thing or two

Wow.. Scotland really going for it. This is big for us. Aren't all points carried forward to the super 6 stage? A washout between the Netherlands and Ireland would be big for us too.

Only points against fellow super six qualifiers from the group are carried forward, but if Scotland beat Afghanistan they have a great chance to make it anyway.

Oh ok I get it now. This is an interesting tournament here. Scotland were most likely going to be the other team that qualified anyway. It gives room to breathe knowing that with 1 upset already we have room for 1 loss. If Afghanistan had beaten both Zim and Scotland they would have been in a good position. Beating Ireland and the Netherlands is not going to be easy for them too. Got a feeling they were overconfident. Anything is possible in a tournament.
