Zim needs to have domestic T20 competition along with existing FC & List A tournament

Post by Detective RDS »

In an ideal world, when T20 cricket is in the rise, Zim needs to have a domestic T20 competition along with the existing FC & List A competition. That will enhance the shorter format skills of the players and make them prepare better for international T20s & T20 leagues (if/when they make it). It will be a nice platform for players like Solomon Mire, Malcolm Waller, Wellington Masakadza etc who have some T20s about them and potential to become good T20 players.

Thoughts ?

It’s obvious. At every level.
We can’t run one format for three consecutive months so it’s a a big ask.

Well, yes. There should be one. There should be 8 games of each format + a final each season.

They just can't manage to sort it.

The Bonsa Spar Sponsored T20 in Bulawayo at Heath Streak Academy is on its' second Sunday of a 9 week winter league.
It has 6 teams with 15players each team and 35players had to be turned away (total 125 applied).
The teams are loaded equally with respect to Tuskers and 1st league players with a coupe of school kids in each.
Evey team has shirts and caps, lunch and drinks provided,DJ/music and every game has an award ceremony for man of the match .

It MUST be noted that ZIMBABWE CRICKET (ZC) has had NO i repeat NO input to this league whatsoever hence the success being enjoyed and the sponsorship obtained.

Our national team essentially needs to play in the South African domestic scene.

I suppose the T20 virus is a reality of modern cricket, but our players are struggling to cope with two versions of the game, never mind a third. I think domestic T20 cricket should be kept to what it was a few years ago when there was some money still in the system, a festival week and nothing else. Most concentration given to developing four-day skills, as surely our Test status and credibility is most important of all, and then Pro50.

I don’t agree. T20 gives you real skills for 50 over stuff.
There’s this ridiculous 100 ball crap looming as well.
The good guys need to be able to clear the boundary when they need to and T20 gives you the skills for this.
A few big innings from Solly and he gets a T20 gig and that gives the youngsters hope as well.
We really need to play this format more often at age group level as well. At this level they just need to play cricket shots and not do much else and it’s exciting and you can have festivals and it’s a good vibe for the kids. School cricket is dying here and this format at least keeps the kids interested.
I agree that in a vibrant economy this would take care of itself. The corporates either have no interest, limited means or have voted with their feet against the administration.

Our failure in the chase against the UAE was largely down to a lack of T20 skills. A couple of big overs and the game was ours, instead we were struggling to rotate the strike and losing wickets.

you then wonder what the general manager for cricket affairs is being paid for if they cant even organise a domestic t20 competition and Lord knows what even happened to the so called ZPL. how then do we expect to turn up for a match when all we do is play a competition vs kenya. seriously.. its mind boggling.
