Player Ratings UAE ODI Series

Post by jaybro »

Zimbabwe easily accounted for the Emirates like most of us predicted and most of the guys had a good time of it taking plenty of wickets and making runs, would have liked to have seen more 'variations' in the lineups but the 4-0 result was the most important point.

Regis Chakabva - 7.5/10: A really good series for Regis 145 runs plus 9 catches, a stumping & a run-out made for a good comeback to the ODI side, considering he averaged 15 with a S/R of 55 going into this series he probably thought he'd never wear the coloured clothing again for Zimbabwe. Still don't think he's a long term solution in ODI cricket especially opening the batting against better opposition, but a good series none the less.

Solomon Mire - 3.5/10: A disappointing return to the side for Mire getting out cheaply in the 1st two matches before making a decent 40 in the next, seems to be too 'one-dimensional' and wants to slog everything to cow corner. At this point unless he can evolve his game he can't continue to open the batting, his average is 21 after 40 odd games and hasn't passed 50 for nearly two years, he's entering Malcolm territory.

Craig Ervine - 7/10: Decent series for Craig but in the form he was in and against the opposition I expected more from him, two fifties is a good series but I would have liked to see him finish unbeaten in the 1st match whilst he left a century out there in the 3rd. Getting out after making starts in the two 'difficult' chases was also disappointing, but overall an okay series for Slug.

Sean Williams - 8/10: Hard to judge a few of the batsman because Zimbabwe had 3 small chases in the series, but Williams made the most of the one time Zimbabwe batted 1st making the quickest ever ODI century by a Zimbo. Much like Craig it was disappointing to see him get out after making starts in the 2nd & 4th ODIs, a player of his experience needs to be escorting the side home in those situations. Bowling was very tight throughout the series and he picked up a couple of wickets in the last match.

Sikander Raza - 5/10: Not a series where his brilliance was required with the bat, but he missed his chances in the 2nd & 3rd matches to make a score, remained not out in the 4th as wickets tumbled around him, but really it was Maruma who got them home. His bowling was okay throughout the series, he now looks like he might be the No.1 spinner in the land?

PJ Moor - 8/10: We might look back on this series as the 'Coming of age for PJ' as he captained the side well throughout the series whilst also seeing them home in a tight situation in the 2nd ODI. Starting to look like he can be a good ODI player down the order with his average moving upwards, only knock on him for the series was the 2 ball duck in the last game, while if you want to be really picky his '52 ball 58' in the 3rd game could or should have been a '52 ball 68' with the game situation.

Tymcen Maruma - 5/10: Hard to judge poor Timmy off just the one innings and even that innings was so up and down it's hard to say how good it actually was? Obviously we didn't get to see it but he was dropped on 2 and one of his boundaries was an inside edge which evaded keeper and stumps. But he hit a few boundaries and top scored so credit to him, it would have been nice to see him play a longer innings but not to be in this series. Caught well and was energetic in the field, with the return of Hamilton & BT he will likely be fighting Regis & Burl for a spot on the European tours ahead.

Ryan Burl - 5/10: Didn't expect to see Burl feature this series especially as a 'No.8 leggie' but he took his chances with the ball taking 4/32 in the 3rd match, only got a few overs in the 4th and got run-out for 1 in his only chance to bat. Not sure what the future holds for him, but I know his current role won't see the best out of him, he really should have opened or came in at 1st drop in the last match.

Brian Chari - N/A: Surprised not to see him open with Mire but was even more surprised to see him brought into the side for last game considering Maruma & Burl hadn't seen any time in the middle after being preferred to Chari. Started off well enough before the rain halted his run, don't think he's a long term ODI opener.

Brandon Mavuta - 5/10: Bit harsh on Brandon to get dropped after the 1st two games, especially considering he only got one over in the 2nd. After hitting the scene with a bang the youngster has hit his 1st real bump, being overlooked for 3 part time spinners isn't great but I guess the fact a front line spinner didn't replace him means he's still No.1 for now? Needs to work on his consistency before trying his variations.

Donald Tiripano - 8/10: Good series from Tiripano taking 6 wickets and keeping things tight, but we all knew he'd have a good series against this opposition. The issue with Tiripano is on these types of decks against the likes of the UAE you know he'll do very well, but he's not going to cut the cheese when things aren't so favourable for him. Booked himself a ticket to Europe but I still think Zimbabwe needs to look beyond him at some point.

Kyle Jarvis - 9.5/10: Couldn't have done much more in this series taking 10 wickets @7.6 going for just over 2 an over KJ showed he's a class above the UAE. He really should have had 5 in the 2nd dig not for Ervine and Moor getting mucked up, can't fault him at all this series, but harder tests aren't far away which will show how good he really is now a days in ODI cricket.

Tendai Chatara - 7/10: Gave the batsman nightmares in the 1st match picking up the MOTM award, but wasn't quite as ruthless in the 2nd or 4th matches. Had to battle KJ and Tiripano for wickets throughout the series which was probably why his numbers dropped off a bit but another good series for Zimbabwe's Mr Dependable.

Chris Mpofu - 5/10: Good to see Bobby back in the side and taking a few wickets, he's now on 91 ODI wickets and I really hope he can get to 100 as he's been a great servant to the game. Got a bit of a pasting at one stage which isn't great considering the rest of the seamers had no issues, but he came back and got a couple of wickets.

Great read as always Jaybro. Helps people like me who could only follow the series in bits and pieces.

Yeah, it would be great to see Mpofu hit the 100 ODI wickets mark.

Bang on the money jaybro can’t argue with that at all .
The Zimbabwe Cricket team have found Ebola in one of their members, but they're not concerned because they have also found Ebatsmen and Efielda!

Thanks fellas much appreciated, I actually struggled with this one quite a bit regarding the ratings for Maruma, Burl & Mavuta considering they got such little chances to show their worth, that’s why they got 5’s.

I really hope Bobby gets to 100! Chatara will obviously breeze past there and unless injury strikes he should go past even Cremer & Utseya into second on the list. Jarvis and Raza I reckon will go close too Williams unlikely at this stage.

Steve Smith started as a number 8 leggie from memory. Just glad Burl got a run. We need him to be coming on for sure.
