Chawaguta takes charge of youth team

By Eddie Chikamhi

FORMER national team coach Walter Chawaguta is set to begin his duties as the new Under-17 coach when he takes the youth side in their preparations for a tournament to be played in South Africa in August.

Chawaguta, who was relieved of his position and replaced by a new technical team led by Alan Butcher in April, will now be in charge of the youth team, which serves as a direct feeder to the senior structures.

His immediate task is to prepare a youth team for the tournament to be held in Benoni, South Africa, from August 6-10.

He has already named a 15-member squad for the trip.

"This is going to be a very short tournament to be played over a period of four days.

"We have picked a squad to work with specifically for this assignment. We haven’t met as a team as yet but I am hoping to work with the players on individual basis because they are not available at the moment.

"The cricket season is taking a break at the moment and some of the players are engaged in other sports at their schools and this makes it difficult to assemble. So we hope to work with them on individual basis," said Chawaguta. He said the team will camp for a week from July 30 and will leave on August 5 for the Benoni tournament.

Chawaguta said he was excited to work with the juniors, who are the future of the game in Zimbabwe.

"We will have more trials for the side because we have to come up with the real Zimbabwe Under-17 team by the end of the year. This is a very important age-group because most of the players in this team are the ones who are going to play at the 2012 Under-19 World Cup. So we need to be thorough in our activities," said Chawaguta.

Under-17 squad:

Alistair MacLeod, Salman Khan, Malcolm Lake, Michael Torr, Deven Bell, Rhett Wallbridge, Ryan Burl, Andre odendaal, Charles Kunje, Odicious Mhanje, Luke Jongwe, Joylord Gumbie

Reserves — Matthew Wicks, Bryan Majoka, Shane Musekwa.

Chawaguta is probably still out of his depth. Maybe he could coach the under-5's?

 Nah I think this man has picked up a lot of coaching tips whilst in charge of the national side. I doubt coaching the Under 17's side will be such a task for him. Then again, you never know....
