He played a bit domestically last season but it seems like he has moved on from cricketing at an international level. Too bad, he was a talented player.

He had a very solid technique, a great eye and one heel of huge bat lift
He would have fitted nicely into the test side had he scored some runs domestically

I was reminded of Barney Rogers for some reason today. Any news on what he is doing these days? He could have been a great ODI opener for us.

He turned up for a couple of 50 over games for the Eagles last season, and didn't really do all that much, then vanished again...

While we shouldn't be dwelling too much on the past and insisting that former players return, it certainly doesn't bode well for the respectability of our local game if the likes of Blignaut & Rogers walk in and out of the game as they please. It's bad enough that Murphy preferred to lecture in SA varsity and Friend is sweating it out for Castletown in between flights! It bears disrespect for Zim cricket. This is more than just a hobby. They are all entilted to their careers and no one wil begrudge them for pursuing them, but cricket - more so international cricket, is a career in itself. These guys would've had more than just a look in for the national side and domestically we would be a much better league with them part of it. The likes of Kenya, Canada & Bermuda included, I can think of no other nation whose cricketers have such a low regard for their nation's cricket, let alone the game itself if you think about it, than some of our very own! Why go into the game in the first place. Either way something must be done to avoid obvious talent fading away from the game with their bundles of talent.

It's called freedom of choice. If they don't want to play or want to do other things, that's their choice. You can't force people to play.

All the more reason why I said that they are entitled to it and if they choose to pursue alternative careers no one should begrudge them! I was merely lamenting the low regard 'certain' players have for cricket as a professional sport in ZImbabwe. Further to that, in not so many words, I highlighted the need for efforts to be directed towards ensuring that players are motivated and rewarded enough to remain involved in the game in whatever capacity if need be. You have a significant amount of local players in the Full Members' domestic leagues, who go into the game knowing fully well that out of the many thousands of professionals, only 30 odd will be in the picture as far as national representation is concerned. Yet they begin and end their careers with modest expectations , never featuring anywhere near their national sides but retire in the sport. This includes the likes of WI, SL & Pak, whose domestic incomes are very small in comparison to Eng, Aus & India. I'll leave out Bang due to their relative infancy. Competitiveness of our domestic cricket might be another factor, but it will never improve if that kind of attitude is maintained and not discouraged.
