Kriterion, I would think your claim was stronger if it said, "scientists ought never".

And I haven't heard any do it in relation to covid so we don't need to argue about that.
Lets look at climate change then. No scientist is claiming to have all the answers regarding climate change. For example no scientist is going to give us a date eg January 15, 2052 for when life on earth will cease to exist due to climate change. However, the scientific community is in agreement that the earth is warming up (by average global temperature), that is warming up faster than it used to 200 years ago, and that all the evidence they currently have suggests human activity is accelerating that warming. They aren't claiming that they are incapable of being wrong (infallible), they are merely stating that they are very confident they are right. Subtle but very important distinction.

People may interpret that as them being sure they are incapable of error, but they aren't actually making that claim for themselves.

Either we are speaking past one another or you are missing the forest for the trees.

The claim wasn't about 'confidence' or infallibility.

You said scientists never claim to be 100 percent correct. That word never is easy to falsify.

A history of paradigm shifts provides supporting evidence along with what I have heard from people's mouths.

As I said, a single word qualifier fixes the sentence from an obvious falsehood to an entirely reasonable statement. And since my self awareness tells me that this whole discussion could be described as nitpicking I ought to give you the last word and stop writing about it.

The only thing I would add is that if scientists overstepping was a problem someone somewhere would have documented evidence and not just anecdotes. An individual scientist could have possibly overstepped...but the body of scientists as a whole cannot do such things because science has built mechanisms (peer review, etc) and science is inherently a self-critiqing field. Scientists are constantly proving themselves wrong, so it belies common sense that would speak in absolutes about any science topic. Thats pretty much all I wanted to say. Anyways, thanks for at least informing me about Ignaz Semmelweis.

Cheers, that is something. He was a win for science and a win for the conversation.

Given sweden is a welfare state, i cant help but think they are ok with elderly (welfare recipients) dying.

At lerast not enough care to take action. its definitly a factor to why they didnt do a shutdown.

I would imagine all of Scandanavia and/or Western Europe is a welfare state. Even Canada is a welfare state compared to the US. I know that you can collect a Canadian pension check even though you've been living in the US for the last 35+ years.

Italian doctors are now saying that coronavirus is disappearing, the new positive tests only contain a fraction of the virus compared to two months ago. In the USA, the pandemic is overm it has been replaced with racism. Suddenly it is ok to gather in large groups again. Bring on the summer!

Disappearing as in the cases are increasing but at a slower rate. I think the only country that has eradicated COVID is NZ due their natural advantages (small population, relative geographic isolation) and the fact that they have a brilliant Prime Minister.
