Huckle strikes at key moment to tip balance
ADAM Huckle returned from injury and had a major influence on the match as Burwell triumphed at title-chasing Horsford.
The former Zimbabwean international had been out for five weeks after pulling a calf muscle on a wet outfield at Saffron Walden on June 19.
Huckle's day did not exactly begin with a bang as he faced only four deliveries before being dismissed for a duck in Burwell's total of 178 all out.
But the all-rounder was quickly involved in the hosts' reply, with his catch off the bowling of Merrick Fuller removing Nathan Perry Warnes for one to leave Horsford on 3 for 1.
And, just when their opponents seemed to be on course for victory at 143 for 5, Huckle bowled danger man Matthew Warnes for 72 and the home side collapsed to 153 all out.
Burwell had lost their previous three Premier League fixtures, but a positive performance when drawing with Horsford earlier in the season gave them hope.
Captain Mark Bissett won the toss and elected to bat, with wicketkeeper Paul Summerskill being promoted to partner Francois Bester at the top of the order.
The visitors were soon in a spot of bother as Summerskill and Henry James failed to reach double figures, but Bester (33) and Glen Goosen (38) helped them recover to 69 for 2. Daniel Jones, Chris Summerskill and Huckle did not stick around long as the visitors' middle order was put under pressure.
But James Craig dug in and battled his way to 68 off 88 balls, with his vital knock including five fours and a maximum.
Horsford skipper Chris Brown was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 50 from his full quota of 18 overs, while Chris Sabburg got 3 for 47 from 15.4 overs.
Huckle's safe pair of hands ensured the home team's reply got off to a bad start, and Fuller (4 for 37) soon got former Cambridge Granta batsman Jonny Atkinson out for one as well.
Warnes led the Horsford fightback with the help of Sabburg (30), Luke Caswell (12) and Brown (14).
However, Huckle (1 for 43) struck a crucial blow when he sent Warnes packing and the hosts lost their last five wickets for only 10 runs. Bester (3 for 33) wrapped things up by claiming the last two wickets.
Not only did Burwell secure a much-needed victory, they also did Cambridge Granta a favour by seeing off one of the title contenders.
Leaders Granta were left frustrated after the weather forced their home clash with reigning champions Vauxhall Mallards to be abandoned without a ball being bowled at Clare College Sports Ground.
But Horsford's defeat will have given the table-toppers some comfort on a day when fellow challengers Saffron Walden and Swardeston both registered wins.
