[Draft 2]: World ODI Teams | 2010 - present

Post by Kriterion_BD »

We have a total of 9 participants (referred to as General Managers, GMs) in this Draft...still one more spot open with Jemisi and foreignfield declining. If I don't get a 10th in the next 24-36 hours, it will commence with just 9 of us. I, Kriterion, will double as League Commissioner.

Rules

1) Draft order will be random (random draw) and format will be snake, same as Draft 1.

2) Players must be from the top 13 ODI teams (ODI Super League teams). Players must have played at least 1 (one) ODI.

3) Each GM will be responsible for arranging the batting order of his/her playing XI. If none is specified, the player will be put in the most logical order by the League Commissioner. Further it is advisable that each GM designates the role they want each player to play (eg "bat", "seam", "bat/spin", or "WK-bat"). If not designated, I will use the comments by the GM in the thread to assign roles. If there are little or no comments, I will give the most reasonable role for your players. Roles can be modified at any time until final squad submission after the draft ends.

4) Each player selected will be given a score which will take his batting/bowling average and strike rate/econ rate and normalize it vs the era median value for his batting role (ie openers vs top order vs finisher vs lower order for batsmen). For example:

If Rohit Sharma is selected as an opener, his batting average and strike rate will be compared against the median global average (24.12) and strike rates (72.49) for ODI openers, as per Cricinfo's statsguru ([url]https://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engin ... atting/url]). This is most sensible and fair way of rating players, IMO.

All 11 players' batting scores will be counted towards the final team score. However, only those players who the GM designates as "bowlers" will have their bowling score count towards the final. Obviously, you need at least 5 designated bowlers. Part timers can give you more players to count, bringing added options to your team, but the scoring will still be based on 5 bowlers. For example if you have 4 specialist bowlers, they will all count as 1 bowler each. And if you have 3 all-rounders as bowlers...the all-rounders will each count as one-third of a bowler.

5) I will be using google drives spreadsheets to help with calculations of the various squads. Anyone who has gmail and would like to see how the scoring is being done is free to check my work (but you won't be able to edit).

6) LC may amend or cancel any rule at any time and will notify GMs in this thread of the rule change, ahead of time. I will try my best not to change any rules unless absolutely necessary.

This will be a bit labor intensive, so please give me a bit of time to finalize results.

All sounds great but with the format wouldn’t it just be advisable to select the player with the highest average?

Playing roles for calculating averages, strike rates, and economy rates are as follows:

Batsmen (openers, top order 3-5, finisher 6-7, lower order 8-11)
Bowlers (seam, spin)

Normalized average * normalized strike rate = batting score

(player average/median average) * (player SR/median SR) = batting score

For example Rohit Sharma's would be (49.27/24.12) * (88.92/72.49) = 2.042 * 1.227 = 2.505 (A "bang average" opener would by definition score 1).

So its not just based on average but strike rate and batting position as well. A 90 strike rate is great for an opener, but might not be so good for a #6 or #7 finisher.

Hmmm I still feel this will be a numbers game; just pick the best numbers

Absolutely. Otherwise you'll just be trying to pick the players with the highest ZCF popularity.

You’ll still be picking your fave players regardless of stats.

The scoring is just to see how our faves stack up!

So Jaybro brought up a good point about this being just based on stats. The stats will merely be used to rate the XIs. You should still pick your favorite players just like the first draft. The stats is just replacing a poll in order to increase objectivity.

I'll definitely pick my favourite players regardless of stats (as long as some of them are still available), but out of curiosity: will you be using career stats or only stats from 2010 onwards?
