Graeme Hick

Ok so I want to reach out to the older members of the forum, and those who may have seen Hick in his pomp. How good was he? I've just seen a documentary about the pressures of cricket and Hick had a good 10 or 15 minutes of screen time. He spoke about his youth in Zimbabwe and said some of the cricket he faced out there growing up was more challenging than county cricket. He explicitly says that county cricket was both, 'my saving grace and my death warrant,' saying it lead him into a false sense of security when playing against the likes of Donald, Akram and Hadlee.
All the great cricketers of his generation said how talented he was but sadly, i never saw him play

I only ever saw him on TV. He was a great player to watch but not necessarily one you would want to bat for your life. I think he would have done better with better coaches and a decent sports psychologist.

Just want to know from perhaps John Ward what he was like as a schoolboy, and why he decided to play for England and not Zimbabwe

Had Hick played for Zim through the 90s alongside Flower and Houghton and Goodwin he would have had a very good international average - much closer to his FC stats. He was dicked around by England considerably.

My uncle knows him quite well. They often meet up when he is doing work at AB field or the Gabba. I will see if I can ask him and try and find out.

In fact, this is possibly the oldest memory I have of watching any test match on TV. I was still getting o know the rules of the game, was fresh from watching some 1992 world cup matches. But the test match was nothing close to those ODIs in terms of entertainment for the kid in me. No colored clothing, the whole ground was woeful to look at. I distinctly remember every bowler other than Kumble struggling to understand this dust bowl of a pitch. That was also when I became a fan of Kumble.

Hick played exceptionally well. It was not fun to watch at all, but he played a great knock - to think of it now. At that point, and for another 3-4 years, I think Hick's was the only English player's name I could remember. And only much later, after I became a big fan of Zimbabwe cricket team, I got to know that he was originally from Zimbabwe.

I played against him many times at school, from junior school all the way through to high school.
