If Mark Vemeulen.....

Post by Kopje »

I remember sometime back we did discuss a thread about Mark returning to the national string, but will ZC allow his offer to help rebuild the academy?

My gut feeling is that if they didn't give him the approval to play for Westerns (I have a feeling he would have made a mockery of the competition, records would have been broken) then he won't play for Zimbabwe again, therefore not giving him the opportunity to pay for the damage he caused.

But he's still in his 20's, time is his friend at the moment. Upon return to test cricket, ZC's stance may change. Vermeulen at number 3 would be a serious boost for the team. A team like this looks pretty strong:

1. H Masakadza
2. B Taylor
3. M Vermeulen
4. T Taibu
5. S Williams
6. C Chibhabha
7. E Chigumbura
8. G Brent
9. P Utseya
10. R Price
11. C Mpofu

With Sibanda, Mupariwa and Cremer as backups.

Certainly, with a top order and higher middle order like that (which is comparable to any of the lower ranked Test nations), Zimbabwe should be able to post scores of 300+.

I find it highly improbable that he will make any sort of a return.

Which is a shame, as he would almost certainly be good enough to make the national team, and would obviously strengthen the domestic competitions.

As long as the current ZC board are in place, there'll be no return for Vermeulen - Chingoka and co are the types who neither forgive nor forget.

Change is coming in Zim, though - it's just a matter of when - and come the day there's a new board in place - hopefully one more focussed on playing the best possible side than in playing politics - he'll get his chance.

Adding to what maehara said, change is on its way and if Morgan wins the runoff, which everyone wants, around here anyway then ZC will be up for major change. Mugabe and his bunch of fairymen are patrons of ZC so oust him and chingoka and co are running cold water. The problem here is that the elite cricketers, who are mainly white are leaving, putting the less experienced black players in the spotlight, so its more like watching your local club cricket that has a team of 11 amatuers.

Until something is done to get baqck the players who deserve to play on poure cricketing merit, which i feel will happen if Morgan is elected, we shall just be watching a pure capitulation of cricket in this country.

Mark will get his chance if Mugabe goes.

Mark Vermeulen was one of the few white players who made himself available after the exodus of 14 rebel players back in 2004.The last two news of cricinfo about him were:

1.Mark Vermeulen was offered to help financely in rebuilding the Zimbabwean academy which he burnt early in this year but the work is now stopped for the financial problem of ZC.Vermeulen was arrested and fined too.He told that he has understood that he had done a mistake and also confirmed that he will not break discipline again in the future. Its prooved by his physician that he has done this for his mental illness.Mark Vermeulen had a stuck in his head by the ball 2 times by Irfan Pathan and Brett Lee.He had a surgery too.

2.Mark Vermeulen told cricinfo in an interview that his eyes in on international return. His last international appearance was back in 2004 and he last played first class match in 2005.He had some disciplineproblems in the past like not playing a delivery telling that there was too cold in Hove, leaving the ground in his own decision, throwing the ball to a spectator while playing club cricket in England for this he was banned for 3 years immediately from all first-class and league cricket in the UK.
Vermeulen told that he is taking his medicine daily and he is a complete changed person now.He also told about his intention to play logan cup matches for Westerns.

Vermeulen has played 8 tests and scored 2 50s and a century with an average of 25.87 and his best score 118.In 32 ODIs he scored 4 fifties with an average of 20.82 and his best score 79.His first class record his very impressive,in 66 matches he has 18 50s and 11 100s with an average of 37.91 and best score 198.

At this moment, its the most easiest task for ZC to include Mark Vermeulen in the squad as he is now living in Zimbabwe and playing club cricket as the captain of 'Old Hararians'.It will be great if 29 years old experienced Mark Vermeulen is back in the Zimbabwean line up.It will really increase the batting strength of Zimbabwe.

Vermeulen certainly has the talent, but there's to much bad blood between him and ZC now for him to make a comeback - it's only grudingly that they tolerate him playing in club cricket, and he's completely overlooked for any ZC-picked sides. Even under a new board, I wouldn't be too sure, as his diagnosed mental problems are always going to be a concern now - ironic, as he almost certainly developed them as a result of the two headstrikes he suffered while playing for Zimbabwe...

Mark Vermeulen will not make a return to the national side as long as ZANU-PF and co. are running Zimbabwe Cricket. To go along with the bad blood between him and ZC there seems to be a quota of whites in the national side of 2 and these spots will go to Sean Williams and Ray Price with Graeme Cremer as a reserve.
Neil Johnson, Alistair Campbell, Murray Goodwin, Andy Flower (w), Grant Flower, Dave Houghton, Guy Whittall, Heath Streak (c), Andy Blignaut, Ray Price, Eddo Brandes

Well.its really not good for Zimbabweas cricket prospective!!!Players r selected not for their performance and experience but for their skin colour.Forget that he is black or he is white, firstly he is a human. Its disappointing that even in the todays modern world it is happening in Zimbabwe!!!!!!!!!!!!!
