As has been well documented by many, Elton Chigumbura's bowling has gone out the window. While it is way too soon to be thinking that his bowling may never get back to an elite level, I was wondering if he could hold down his place in the side just as a batsman.

Let's say for the sake of this argument that he becomes just a batsman long term, would you include him in your side? I personally think he is good enough to get in just on his batting, although his place in the team would be much less secure. What do other forum users think?

To be honest, and my opinion only, if he wasn't captain and he was playing as a batsman, I don't think I'd have him the side. :W:

On current form, yes, I would think that he can get in as a batsman alone. In the absence of Blignaut, and out of touch Coventry, he is the only lower order power hitter we have, unless we can somehow get Mutizwa / Chakabva in the mix.

Of the current players in the Zim team, Elton Chigumbura has the sixth highest first class average, of 35. Only Forster Mtizwa (46), Sean Williams (41), H. Masakadza (39), Brendon Taylor (37), Tatenda Taibu (38) are higher than him.

I would definitely keep him in the team as just a batsmen he is an ACE up our sleeve, personally I start lowering the flag once Elton goes. I knew we would not beat SA when he was run out. I would have preferred Tibba to go cos with Elton there, we still had a chance of some big shots which was what we needed

I think you guys are being a little too harsh on Elty, just recently he won us the second ODI against Ireland with a 32 odd runs. He has performed below what we expect because we all know what he is capable of, but its three games two of which are 20/20 games and y'all know anything can happen in pro20 games. We have a few match winners in the team who have managed to hold their nerve and win us matches. Elton and Taylor have done that consistently so i think its way too soon to even consider dropping him even if he wasnt captain. What i am sure about is before the end of this series we will meet here and praise him coz its difficult to keep him silent for the whole series.

We're not critisining his batting mate, just the fact that he's not even bowling.
