Zimbabwe U-19 cricket off to SA

The Zimbabwe Under-19 cricket team left for South Africa Sunday to compete at the Cubs Week tournament before locking horns with the hosts’ Under 19 team in five limited overs matches and two Pro20 matches.

Zimbabwe left with a squad of 15 players and a five-men technical team led by head coach Chris Harris and his assistant Walter Chawaguta for the tour which will take place until January 23.

New Zealander Harris and his youngsters are scheduled to take part at the Cubs Week tournament in Cape Town which starts today and ends on Friday.

Cricket South Africa Under-19 Franchise Cubs Week will feature the Nashua Titans, Chevrolet Knights, Nashua Dolphins, Cape Cobras and the Highveld Lions.

Namibia Under-19 are also expected to take part at the tournament.

After the Cubs Week tournament, the Zimbabwe team will then move to Johannesburg where they are expected to meet their South African counterparts in five limited overs matches and two Pro20 matches.

Zimbabwe’s team manager Levy Hombarume said the team had prepared well for the tournament.

“The preparations for the tour went on very well and the youngsters had an opportunity to play some practice matches against the Mashonaland Eagles ‘B’ side.

“They won two of the three matches played at the Country Club and Harris had expressed satisfaction at the level of preparedness,” said Hombarume.

Whats wrong with our under 19 .we used to be world beaters and seeing us go down to SA franchise teams is a dissapointment .\it only goes to show how low standards had gone in Zim .I hope the standards will pick up soon.

Unless Zim U19, play a lot of matches they cannot get any better. We need to have game time to know on which level we are on. After these dismall games, we know where we are, at the bottom. We back on the drawing board and see how we going to improve especially more Franchise funding for development of junior cricket.
