Brent ventures into cricket coaching

Former Zimbabwe national cricket team seamer bowler Gary Brent, who retired from international cricket in 2008, has now ventured into coaching.

Brent (34) who played 70 one-day internationals and four Tests for Zimbabwe, said he wanted to give back to sport by helping to nurture upcoming youngsters in the junior ranks.

In an interview with NewsDay at the sidelines of a junior player’s clinic for youngsters from high density suburbs at the Interfin High Performance Centre, formerly the Country Club, Brent said:

“As I was getting towards the end of my career my body was getting sore and the last straw was when I broke my finger in a domestic game. I decided that it was about time I did something else and it was an easy decision to start coaching.

“It’s something that I have a passion for and I want to pass on the knowledge that I have acquired to the upcoming youngsters and see cricket develop in this country.”

Brent is a holder of a Level Three coaching certificate which he acquired in England and is also a Level Two certified fitness instructor.

Interestingly, he holds Level One coaching certificates for hockey and rugby.

Together with another former national team player David Mutendera, Brent is working with young players from schools like Chipembere Primary School in Highfield.

Brent said he had also been working with the national age group teams, the Under-13 and 19 teams and had plans of contributing to Zimbabwe Cricket’s development programmes, starting with the current coaching clinic.
