Midwest Rhinos v Botswana Select
Kwekwe Sports Club, 18th & 20th March 2011

Here's the official press release:
The Botswana Cricket Association Select and Midwest Rhinos, a franchise of Zimbabwe Cricket based in Kwekwe will be engaged in two friendly matches to be played on Friday 18 and Sunday 20 March at Kwekwe Sports Club. The clash of these two teams is set to create a hive of activity in this usually quiet town.

The relationship between the two sides was forged when Jason Gillespie, head coach of the Midwest Rhinos and Arjun Menon, head coach for the Botswana Cricket Association Select met briefly in Bulawayo last year in December. “Our Senior team needs to have more cricket exposure with a top class cricket franchise team and I feel we will get this playing against the Midwest Rhinos,” said Arjun. Both teams are bound to gain tremendously from this experience giving the Rhinos an opportunity to play some competitive cricket ahead of their PRO40 semi-finals match on the 25th of March against the Mutare based franchise, Mountaineers.

Kenyon Ziehl, CEO of the Midwest Rhinos remarked, “ Midwest Rhinos are excited once again, to be promoting cricket in Zimbabwe. We consider ourselves as setting the standards on how franchise cricket should operate. Our grounds, facilities and hospitality are unparralled and will hopefully lead to further cricket tours from beyond our borders. We certainly hope that these matches will develop into a regular occurrence and forge a strong relationship between us, with both teams moving forward and gaining much experience from each other.”

There are 5 franchises dotted across the country that constitute a pool of about 150 players in total. With the progression of time, the more exposure the local teams get by playing international sides, the more experienced the players become on the field during international matches.

Midwest Rhinos: Friday Kasteni, Innocent Chikunya (wk), Bothwell Chapungu, Malcolm Waller ©, Rememberence Nyathi, Solomon Mire, Roland Benade, Simon Mugava, Neville Madziva, Taurai Muzarabani, Alex Mahviko, Head Coach: Jason Gillespie

Looking at the names I am guessing most of Botswana's cricketers are from the country's asian community. Has Botswana ever had a white community with which to provide cricketers?

There's about 9000 of em
Saying that zimbo has only 20 something themselves with a few expats

Funny enough Kenya has about 60,000 and namibia about 160,000.

Unsure why those countries can't turn it on like zim can on the field

Namibia isn't too bad at cricket. I guess they are more germanic so cricket may not be in their blood so much.

It seems like the asian community have abandoned Zimbabwean cricket as well. Or have they abandoned the whole country?
