MASHONALAND EAGLES’ batting woes will definitely be a thing of the past in the 2011/2012 cricket season. This comes after forgotten cricketer; Kudakwashe Samunderu, announced that he will be returning to domestic cricket next season.
The 23-year-old batsman, who last played for Mashonaland in 2005, has been opening the batting for the University of Western Cape in South Africa where he is furthering his studies. Samunderu, who followed the footsteps of Hamilton Masakadza — sacrificing his national team place for education — will be looking to end his five-year sabbatical by joining Mashonaland Eagles later this year.
He will be the second player to re-join the Harare-based franchise from a South African university, the first being Prosper Tsvanhu who, joined the Eagles in the last quarter of the 2010/2011 season from the University of KwaZulu Natal.
“I am hoping to come back to Zimbabwe at the end of the year when I have completed my studies.
“Since I have been away from home for a while I would prefer being close to my family in Harare. So I would prefer joining Mashonaland Eagles.
“I still have ambitions and dreams of playing for my country. Even if I fail, I would still be happy just being able to be part a of the Zimbabwean cricket renaissance. “I believe that playing in a highly competitive environment has perfected my game and I hope my efforts to improve the sport will be recognised.
“There is no doubt that the future of Zimbabwe Cricket is very bright. It is our responsibility as players to uphold and improve the standards of the game in the country, especially for the future generations,” he said.
Before going to South Africa, Samunderu had been a regular in the Zimbabwe A side. In 2004, he was part of the squad that was white-washed 4-0 by the Lions of England, even though he was not given a cap.
