I guess the umpires were holding him back by giving him out. He is right that we have too many first class teams - some of the players representing the franchises are amateur club cricketers at best. Even the Logan Cup Final features some no-name players.

So now we ARE agreeing we have too many franchises ??


I do find it interesting mark has come out and said this just after my thread the other day on this topic ....

Vermeulen is a bitter fruitcake. He has had chance after chance after chance. If he wants to go to Golf then good luck to him. I would suggest the other golfers be wary when he is around, in case they find a putter flying in their direction.

I agree with that.
I don't like the fact the we're calling these boys 'club cricketers' at best when, in all honesty, not many of us have actually seen them play.
I think it's sad that he's going, but in terms of the Mountaineers Cricketing future, I think it's a blessing in disguise.
All these tantrums and moments of decent would have given the team a bad name, and lets think about the younger guys coming through...what would they think seeing a guy like Vermuelan mouthing off to an umpire....not good.
But, I personally wish him all the best, it's been a sad story....but it's over now, and we need to move on from past players like Vermuelan if we're going to move forward as a cricketing nation

Unfortunately everyone seems to have got it wrong why he actually got fired by Fat Phil. It was not because he had a disagreement with the umpires but because he refused to play and then demonstrated on the final day of the match against the Eagles as his whole team had not been paid for three months. Also refusing to play that day was Panyangara, Mushangwe and Maruma, but they did not recieve the same punishment. In fact while he was demonstrating Fat Phil told the ground staff to remove Vermeulen but they were stopped by the rest of the team who said Vermeulen was speaking for all of them. Even though he is a head case he left cricket on a raw deal.

Can I perhaps venture the opinion that the stand off with Phil was the last straw that broke the camels back? I believe he was on pretty shaky ground anyway
