Is the top order becoming settled?

Post by brmtaylor.com admin »

For limited overs:

1. Sibanda
2. Masakadza
3. Taylor

For Tests:

1. Mawoyo
2. Sibanda
3. Masakadza
4. Taylor

They seem like combinations that all things being equal, could serve Zimbabwe for many years to come.

On an unrelated note, what is your first eleven for the ICC World Twenty20? There are a few interesting questions raised from this recently concluded series:
  • Would you stick with the 5 specialist bowlers?
  • Is Price able to force his way back in, and at the expense of Cremer or Utseya? Or a return to triple-spin considering it's Sri Lanka?
  • Does Chigumbura keep his spot? Does he make way for another allrounder or a batsman like Coventry?
  • Ervine vs Waller vs Taibu - it seems to me that they are all fighting for the one spot
  • If Taibu players, does Taylor still keep wicket ala 2007?
  • Who is 12th man?

I dont think so I think Ham, Stuart and even Taylor can have a toss. We need another batsmen to take our score to the 180ish in each game instead of trying to defend low totals with our bowlers.

No Price in My team, I think Price can have one more ceremonial Game to just say good bye and retire. I think its safe to retire

I feel for Chigs the same way peeps want Coventary in the team. Purely sentimental at the whole talent potential story bit both are out of Form. I would throw in wild card Chibhabha there!

Taibu, without a thought unfortunately.

Would rather have tibba behind the stumps to get up the nerves of the batsmen a bit and just generally chirp!

I would also add whether we should chase or we should bat first if we win the toss. I say we chase. Setting the pace is too much pressure in my view. And If peeps like Levi bat first they would also have the same problem. But when the score is set everyone knows what they have to do.

1. Sibanda
2. Masakadza
3. Taylor
4. Tibba
5. Stu
6. Elton
7. Cremer
8. Usteya
9. Muzhange
10. Jarvis
11. Mpofu

12 Waller/Ervine I would put one of these in for Muzhange if we decide to go with 4 bowlers

I can't remember the squad, but this would be my T20 team, considering we're in spin friendly conditions.

1. Sibanda
2. Mazakadza
3. Taylor (wkt/cpt)
4. Waller
5. Coventry
6. Ervine
7. Chigumbura
8. Cremer
9. Utsea
10. Jarvis
11. Mpofu/ Price

i think if the team wanted another spinner they would be better off picking Waller. That way the team will have an extra batter.

Definately need Coventry for the T/20's. Would give him a lengthy run in the ODi's and see if he can bat his way into form.

No Pricey for me any more in this form of the game.

We need the extra batsman, so a combination of Waller, Chigs, Hammy, maybe even Taylor or Matsi will have to do. That said, Chigs only merits his place if he's able to contribute an over ot two with the ball.

Tibba behind the stumps for sure. With the bat Tibba is a better version of Matsi (quick between the wickets, even more innovative), so I'd have him take Matsi's spot. Which leaves two batting spots for three contestants: Matsi, Waller, Ervine -- at the moment Waller's bowling looks a strong argument in his favour. Haven't seen Matsi bowl recently.

Unfortunately Coventry has no further opportunities to claim a place. Would have liked to see him in the mix.

my XI (batting order from 4 downwards flexible according to the match situation)
Vusi
Hammy
Taylor
Matsi/Ervine
Tibba
Waller
Chigs (wildcard: Coventry)
Cremer
Pro
Jarvis/Muzhange
Mpofu

Taylor makes Foster Mutizwa look like MS Dhoni with the gloves so we can't allow him to keep wicket in Sri Lanka.

He conceded a lot of byes and 'missed' clear catches. BT isn't athletic enough anymore to squat behind the stumps. Taibu will keep!

I would pick this team too. Price has the experience to guide this team in pressure situations, many times our team has capitulated or gave up defending a low total and I think Price's willingness to fight fight all the way will be needed. Mpofu is now the wise hand, Jarvis is settling in nicely and I like Cremer and Chigs in there. Chigs once won a county contract, there is still something in there, he needs to drag it out. I like Cremer given that it'll be SL, he is a future world star and can bat but he is not cemented in there yet for me; Vitori, Muzhange or Masakadza Jnr can still get his place if they find something on those pitches or if Chigs doesn't fire bowling wise. I have faith in Waller, he is a class act (Ervine has a lot to do to steer him out of the way). I have to persist with Coventry, if two of either Vusi, Hammi or Taylor get out cheaply (very conceivable) we need a guy to smack the ball and get the run rate to a respectable level before Waller & Co consolidate. The top 4 picks itself.
