Neil Ferreira, Richard Sims and Brian Murphy

Post by Detective RDS »

NEIL FERREIRA:

Neil Ferreira is 29 years old left handed wicket keeper batsman. He was one of the 15 rebel players of Zimbabwe. He did make a comeback in 2005 and made his test debute against New Zealand in the 1st test,2005.After playing just one test,he wasnt offered a contract in 2005.No reason was showed.

Ferreira made 5 and 16 runs in his debute test.Zimbabwe lost that test by an innings and 294 runs.Zimbabwe scored 59 and 99 runs in their two innings.Ferreiras 16 of 90 delivaries was the second highest score of Zim in that innings after Masakadzas 42 and Ferreira faced the highest delivary. So,it wasnt a bad attempt in terms his team prospective.

Ferreira topped the batting average in the logan cup 2004.He has a good first class record too.In 40 FC matches he scored 2515 runs averaging 34.93 with 8X50,9X100 and a best score of 220*.His List A record doesnt seem so impressive,in 20 list A matches he scored 292 runs averaging 19.46 with just a fifty(52*).

His ability is perhaps limited by international standards. But the best thing is that he is a great-hearted player who rarely surrenders his wicket easily. He can be a good test specialist.

After not being offered a contract in 2005,Ferreira went to play club cricket in England for Northleach Town and topped the batting average in 2008 season. Here is the link:

His 12 innings r (200*,13,1,50,68*,142*,62*,126*43,119,95,4).In 12 matches he scored 923 runs at an average of 131.86 with 4X50,4X100 and a best score of 200*.

Neil Ferreira also works at Rendcomb College in England, coaching Cricket, hockey and rugby, coaching the 2nd XV.

RICHARD SIMS:

Richard Sims is 29 years old ,is an all-rounder who bats in the middle order and can bowl off spin.He got injured on a tour of South Africa and it has affected his cricketing career and it's weakened his throw. As a result he is forced to field in close during games. He gave up rugby to concentrate on cricket.Richard Sims is one of the 15 rebel players of Zimbabwe. He represented Zimbabwe in 3 ODIs and last played ODI against South Africa in 2003 in Southampton.

In 3 ODIs Sims scored 31 runs at an average of 31 with a best score of 24 but he failed to pick up a wicket. His FC batting record seems impressive. In 21 FC matches he scored 1325 runs at an average of 36.80 with 8X50,2X100 and a best score of 204.In 30 list A matches he scored 604 runs at an average of 25.16 with 3X50 and a best score of 87.Sims has 30 FC wickets at 58.36,best 6/132 and 20 list A wickets at 38.25,best 3/12.

Richard Sims is playing club cricket in England for Swardeston where he topped the batting average in 2008 season.Sims along with Zimbabwean former captain Brian Murphy is listed in the 1st 11 squad of Swardeston club. Here is the link:

Here is the link of the player statistics of Richard Sims in his club website:

http://swardeston.play-cricket.com/prof ... d=10123071

Richard Sims also coaches cricket, hockey and rugby at Norwich School, working as a batting and bowling coach.

BRIAN MURPHY:

Brian Murphy is 32 years old who is a former captain of Zimbabwe. He is a leg spinner. He is also a more-than-useful tailend batsman, who often attends to nightwatchman duties. He represented Zimbabwe from 2000 to 2003.

Murphy hasnt got a good test record. In 11 tests he took 18 wickets at 61.83 with a best bowling figure of 3/32.In 31 ODIs he took 29 wickets at 38.96 with a best bowling figure of 3/43.

In 28 FC matches Murphy has 59 wickets at 47.18,best 4/71 and in 43 list A matches he has 46 wickets at 35,best 3.43.So,Murphy didnt enjoy a good domestic cricket either.

Murphy was a surprise choice as captain in 2001 when Heath Streak decided to stand down and concentrate on his bowling. But after 4 wicketless ODIs in Sharjah and a drawn test(wicketless) against Bangladesh, none of which he won,he sustained a hand injury and left out and the captaincy was took over by Stuart Carlisle.

Information from cricinfo: Murphy quits Zimbabwe (October 8,2003)
When Murphy returned to top cricket in 2002-03 after his hand injury, Heath Streak had been reinstated as captain and Murphy's place in the team had gone to the rapidly improving left-arm spinner Raymond Price. He had a good club season, with his batting improving by leaps and bounds, and the selectors showed he was still in their thoughts when they invited him to captain Zimbabwe A in their tour of Namibia last August.

But Murphy declined, preferring to play for his club side in England where he was earning more money. Now comes his move to Cape Town, which has almost certainly drawn down the curtain on a somewhat unfulfilled first-class career. He has a fine cricket brain, as evidenced by his selections to captain teams over the years, and was clearly approaching his best years as a player. This is another serious loss for Zimbabwe cricket.
Last international appearance of Murphy was in the ICC World Cup 2003.Murphy was the 3rd leading wicket taker of Zimbabwe after Streak and Hondo. He played 5 matches there but he bowled in 4 innings as he couldnt bowl in his last match against NZ.In 5 ODIs he took 5 wickets at 27.80,best 3/44,economy 4.63.

Brian Murphy is playing club cricket in England for Swardeston. Here is the link of the player statistics of Brian Murphy in his club website:

http://swardeston.play-cricket.com/prof ... p?id=85765

Murphy quit Zimbabwe in 2003 and took a job coaching at the University of Cape Town in South Africa. It is said that he still works there.

Neil Ferreira,Richard Sims and Brian Murphy are all experienced players of Zimbabwe.I believe that they hv much more cricket left in them.

i thought I would copy this article from way back in 2005 which might explain a little bit why people like ferraira, Carlisle etc were not offered a contract. Seems a bit malicious by bvute but then we all know the way some people in ZC operate. See below for link

Door shut on four Zimbabwean cricketers' careers

Stuart Carlisle: in the forefront of the latest player-board stalemate © AFP

Ozias Bvute, the managing director of Zimbabwe Cricket, has said that the doors were closed on the careers of Stuart Carlisle, Craig Wishart, Barney Rogers and Neil Ferreira after a contract dispute erupted last week.

The contracts of the four cricketers were suddenly withdrawn by Bvute as he believed that they weren't performing well enough. "The players expressed views as to what they believed they were worth," Bvute told Associated Press. "Those figures were in excess of their performances. This was not a vindictive exercise. A level one contract is offered on the basis of runs scored and wickets taken, and these players were clearly not performing."

Bvute also confirmed that the players could not play for Zimbabwe without a contract. "The door is closed for them," he said. "Even for Ferreira who has played only one match."

Other players have been told that their contracts would be considered at the end of this month, depending on how they perform in the next few weeks. This has upset the players. Carlisle told AFP: "This could even be just as serious for cricket here as the last dispute 18 months ago because this time the black players are with us."

Carlisle was at the forefront of the 2004 strike sparked by Streak's sacking for complaining about alleged racism by the selectors. He was one of 15 contracted players, all white, who backed Streak and were fired in turn. This set off months of negotiations characterised by hostilities and legal confrontations.

Carlisle said at his Harare home Saturday that he told Kevin Curran, the Zimbabwe coach, that he did not want to play against India in the last league match of the Videocon Cup, nor did Wishart. They preferred, he said, for lower-level players to be given the experience.

Carlisle said this was reported by Curran to ZC general manager Osias Bvute, who "immediately withdrew my contract and those of the others". Carlisle, who has played in 37 Tests and 112 ODIs for his country, now faces the end of his international cricket career, along with Wishart, Rogers and Ferreira, the latter after playing in just one match against New Zealand last month.

Carlisle said: "I have plans in hand, but I cannot say what they are." Carlisle and Grant Flower, who is now with Essex, were the most outspoken of the players during their 2004 dispute with ZC. All the affected contract players have held several meetings during the last two days and will have another one on Monday concerning the issue.

Clive Field, their representative, has held at least one meeting with Bvute, but the outcome is not known. Bvute was not available for comment. Those newly contracted are also unhappy with the overall situation and have been involved in meetings with the others, Field said. Streak commented: "I can confirm that there are to be further talks on this issue next week. Other than that I should not discuss it."

There was one ray of hope for these players as Clive Field, the players' representative, said "if the issue of these cricketers is not a priority then we are heading for confrontation as players feel very strongly about it."

Thanks for the post,Jimbo.
Bvute told Associated Press. "Those figures were in excess of their performances. This was not a vindictive exercise. A level one contract is offered on the basis of runs scored and wickets taken, and these players were clearly not performing."
The four players were Stuart Carlisle,Craig Wishart,Barney Rogers and Neil Ferreira.

Carlisle and Wisharts last test appearance was against New Zealand in 2005.Wishart scored 34 runs(0,5,30,0) at 8.75 in 4 innings and Carlisle scored 31 runs(20,0,1,10) at 10.33 in 4 innings.Wishart did fail in the 1st test but scored 30 runs in the 1st inn of the 2nd test but it was a bit unfortunate that he was run out in the 2nd innings scoring 0.After a year returning to the test arena,Carlisle couldnt make an impact.

Carlisle and Wishart both were picked for the Videocon Traingular Series(ZIM-IND-NZ).Wishart only played the first match against New Zealand and scored 3.It means,Craig Wishart was out of form and he wasnt offered a contract. Then,he announced his retirement at the age of 31 to keep himself free from struggling.Okay, thats fine.

Lets come to Carlisle's point.Carlisle played the first three match and scored 64 runs(25,9,30) at 21.33.But Carlisle started to find his touch just was needed to stick around to get exposed.Carlisle and Wishart preffered the former coach of Zimbabwe Kevin Curran that they didnt want to play the last match against India to give the younger guys a chance of gaining experience.I think, they hvnt done a mistake by telling this.As Zimbabwe lost the first three match, then whats the problem to give the young guys a chance as they will represent Zimbabwe in the future years to come.Curran told ZC about this incident and immediately their contracts were withdrawn. In my opinion,Carlisle should hv been given contract as he is a very experience player of Zimbabwe. After that,Carlisle also announced his retirement at the age of 33 after being fed-up with politics.Okay, thats fine too.

Neil Ferreia played just the 1st test match against New Zealand in 2005 and scored total 21 runs(5,16) and I will say it wasnt a bad effort keeping the eyes over the performance of Zimbabwe in the following test in which they bowled out for 59 and 99 runs.Neil Ferreira also had the highest batting average in the logan cup 2004.So,this performnace reason doesnt go with Neil Ferreira. He should be given a contract even now.Ferreira is doing very well for his club team Northleach Town in UK and he ages 29 now.

Barney Rogers last test appearance was back in 2005 against South Africa. He scored
36 runs(1,28,7,0) at 9 in his 4 innings. He struggled against the world class pace attack of South Africa in South Africa. His last ODI appearance was also against South Africa in 2005 which was played before the test series.Rogers scored 49 runs(1,47,1) at 16.33 in 3 ODIs.His 47 run in the 2nd ODI wasnt a bad one either.Rogers was the man of the series against Bangladesh in 2004.His ODI record is very good,in 15 ODIs he scored 478 runs at 31.86 with 5 50s and a best score of 84.I think, this was enough to give him a contract by ZC didnt do it.Rogers isnt playing currently.Rogers is only 26 years old and ZC should offer him a contract

Off all of the players lost to the player strike I feel Barney Rogers loss was one of the saddest. Players like Grant Flower, Stuart Carlisle, and Craig Wishart only had a few years left anyway, but Barney Rogers was so young and was already performing impressively on the international stage.

Ya,it was very unfortunate for Barney Rogers prospective. He is now just 26 and I reckon he should be given a contract.A batsman like him in the top of the order will definitely boost the batting strength of Zimbabwe while Vusimuzi Sibanda is out of form.
