Easterns and Northerns engage in cagey third round match

Northerns 207 all out in 65 overs (E.Chigumbura 41, I.Senzere 33 S.Mwakayeni 25, N.Mushangwe (4/40) D.Hondo (3/60) S.Masakadza (3/71)

Easterns 45 for 2 in 13.4 overs (D.Mazhawidza 21, S.Matsienyeri 17* E.Chigumbura (1/18), A.Manyumwa (1/0)

NATSAI Mushangwe took four for 40 runs as he led the demolition of Northerns batsmen on the first day of the third round of Logan Cup at the Academy ground, restricting them to 207 all out in 65 overs, but Easterns dropped two wickets before stumps on Monday to give their opponents some hope.

After taking an early initiative, Easterns who won the toss and put Northerns in to bat, quickly got off to a flier taking three wickets for just 46 runs in eight overs with Cephas Zhuwawo (17), Dean Mazhawidza (4) and Tatenda Taibu (0) all perishing in the morning blitz.

Ishmael Senzere (33) who retired injured after being hit by a Douglas Hondo delivery, laid the foundation in his ordeal that lasted 100 minutes but his efforts could not be complemented as only Elton Chigumbura (41) tried to repair the damage as the Easterns bowlers maintained their stranglehold on the match.

Douglas Hondo and Shingi Masakadza took three wickets each and that coupled with Mushangwe’s heroic four wickets was crucial in restricting the defending champions and the current leaders of the series to a low total.

But in reply the Steven Mangongo coached Easterns lost two wickets for 45 runs. Dean Mazhawidza (21) became the first wicket for Chigumbura before Hamilton Masakadza was cleanly bowled by in form Admire Manyumwa for just seven runs off 12 balls lasting 13 minutes to leave Stuart Matsikenyeri stranded on 17 and night watchman Prosper Utseya scoreless after facing 13 balls as stumps were called.

Still chasing 207, Easterns were still 162 runs behind with two wickets down. Manyumwa and Chigumbura got the reward for their brilliant bowling but Trevor Garwe did bowl some good line and length, albeit without a wicket to maintain pressure on the top order.

But it is the manner with which the Kevin Curran coached Northerns were bowled out that was the talking point. Tatenda Taibu who showed signs of improving after a bad start to the series was out for a six ball duck caught by Benard Mlambo off Hondo before the same bolwer removed Regis Chakabva (14) and Chigumbura to finish with figures of 3 for 60 in 20 overs.

The three men demolition gang though could not remove Trevor Garwe who remained standing for 23 from 53 balls in 76 minutes batting at number 10. The match resumes Tuesday morning with Easterns hoping to set a huge target in this otherwise very cagey affair between two of the bitterest rivals.

Takarusenga finds no support in Westerns first innings

Westerns 145 all out (F. Takarusenga 65, J.Nyumbu 18; T. Muzarabani 4/46, E. Rainsford 2/22, B. Mugochi 2/22)

Centrals 105 for 4 (C. Chibhabha 39, M. Waller 28*, E. Rainsford 3*; T. Mupariwa 2/22, N. Ncube 1/28, C. Mpofu 1/37)

Day 1 of 4-day match.

AN unbeaten 65 from opener Freedom Takarusenga found no support from the other Westerns batsmen, on the first day of their Logan Cup match against Centrals at the Harare Sports Club as 145 all out appeared a low score for Centrals to chase.

Takarusenga started off slowly after Westerns were sent in to bat by Centrals who had won the toss.

When fellow opener Charles Coventry (15) fell to the fourth ball of the fifth over after exposing himself to Zimbabwe pacer Edward Rainsford, Takarusenga was only on four runs.

Displaying the patience that is the hallmark of multi-day cricket, the 26-year old right-hander went on to occupy the crease for a good 234 minutes. During that time, he crafted his maiden first class half century off 140 balls in 119 minutes. Such was his commitment to go the long haul his 50 had only two fours.

That would be all the boundaries he would strike up to his 65, a first class career best, which came off 160 balls.

But there was no support for Takarusenga with Westerns wickets falling regularly as Rainsford and Muzarabani shared the top order between themselves to leave them 41 for four.

The innings steadied a bit as the next wicket to fall, that of Taurai Madiri (10) who fell victim to a run-out, only did so after the addition of 29 runs. But the next ball saw Romeo Kasawaya trapped leg before wicket by Brighton Mugochi. That ushered in Tawanda Mupariwa who went for three, caught by Rainsford off the bowling of Muzarabani.

The 22-year old right-arm fast-medium bowler finished with four wickets for 46 runs off 10.3 overs. Rainsford claimed two for 22 in 11 and Mugochi also two wickets for 22 runs but in eight overs.

Centrals were 105 for four in their first innings at stumps, with captain Chamunorwa Chibhabha (39) the top-scorer. Malcolm Waller chipped in with an unbeaten 28.

He will resume batting with Rainsford (3) on Tuesday morning.

Hi,
Just a couple of milestones registered by the end of round 2. Raymond Price is now the highest wicket taker in the Logan Cup with 136 wickets. Christopher Mpofu, Douglas Hondo & Brighton Mugochi recorded their 50th wickets. Chamu Chibhabha(49) & Timycen Maruma(44) are closing in on their 50th wickets.
Prosper Utseya & Johnson Marumisa passed 1000 runs in Logan Cup. Hamilton Masakadza & Elton Chigumbura each passed 1500 runs. Stuart Matsikemyeri (1868)is now amongst the top 10 rungetters.
As stated earlier, these stats of mine are have never been audited & are not officially recognized, so if there is an error I apologise. But maybe we still could have a bit of fun.
As at the end of round 2 I believe there are 10 player who have the double of 1000 runs & 50 wickets. Any guesses?

Centrals poised for first Logan Cup

Westerns 145 and 46 for 4 (T. Madiri 18*, C. Mpofu 7*; E. Rainsford 3/11, B. Mugochi 1/10)

Centrals 325 all out (M. Waller 81, E. Rainsford 51, T. Kamungozi 44; T. Mupariwa 4/84, J. Nyumbu 2/35, N. Ncube 2/47, C. Mpofu 2/85)

Day 2 of 4-day match.

Centrals put themselves in good stead for their first win of the 2008/2009 Logan Cup tournament when they ended their first innings with a lead of 180 runs over Westerns and then had them 46 for four at stumps in their second innings.

After resuming their first innings on 105 for four at the Harare Sports Club yesterday morning, Centrals went on to post 325 runs before they were dismissed by Westerns in 101.5 overs.

The platform for that total was the partnership for the fifth wicket between Malcolm Waller and Edward Rainsford, which was good for a solid 87 runs in 156 minutes.

Waller was given a life by Romeo Kasawaya before he could add to his overnight 28 and went on to make the amnesty count. The son of former Zimbabwe international, Andy, was the top scorer for Centrals with 81 runs off 180 balls. He hit eight fours, five of them on his way to his half century which came off 139 balls.

Rainsford, displaying an aplomb not normally associated with those chosen for the onerous task of nightwatchman, built on his overnight three runs to a 50 off 110 balls, four of them fours and then fell on 51 when he was caught by Freedom Takarusenga off the bowling of Njabulo Ncube in the 71st over.

Waller was the next wicket to fall when John Nyumbu had him caught by Tawanda Mupariwa with the third ball of the 82nd over.

Then, Centrals were 226 for six, and leading by 81 runs. That lead would get even more comfortable, thanks to an 81-run partnership for the eighth wicket between Tendai Chisoro (39) and Tafadzwa Kamungozi (44).

The latter had survived a dismissal when he was dropped by Nyumbu while on 34.

Zimbabwe pacer Tawanda Mupariwa finished with four wickets for 84 runs in 27.5 overs, six of them maiden. Nyumbu had two for 35 in 12, Ncube also two wickets but for 47 runs and in 16 overs with five maidens and Christopher Mpofu two for 85 runs in 26 overs.

Rainsford then exchanged bat for ball with similar effect, as he cut through the Westerns top order. He had opener Freedom Takarusenga, the hero of the Westerns first innings with a career-best 65 on Monday, caught by R. Chinyengetere without troubling the scorers for the seven balls he faced and then dismissed Kasawaya for nine when he was caught by Richmond Mutumbami before trapping Charles Coventry (4) leg before wicket.

Rainsford also had a hand, in both senses of the phrase, in the fourth wicket that fell during the Westerns innings. It was his catch off Brighton Mugochi that sent Mbekezeli Mabuza walking.

Westerns have it all to do this morning, when Taurai Madiri (18) and Christopher Mpofu (1) resume their second innings with four wickets gone and 46 runs on the board – a deficit of 134.

Easterns 146 all out in 54.4 overs (F.Mutizwa 52, P.Utseya 27 S.Matsikenyeri 26 A.Manyumwa 5/19 E.Chigumbura 3/34 T.Garwe 1/54)

Northerns second innings 150/5 in 35 overs (C.Zhuwawo 51 R.Chakabva 35 E.Chigumbura 38* S.Masakadza 3/59 P.Utseya 2/50)

Day 2 of 4

DEFENDING champions Northerns tightened their grip around Easterns’ neck in their third round of the Logan Cup at Academy grounds when again, Admire Manyumwa was critical with ball taking 5 wickets for just 19 as they finished the second day with a 61 runs advantage.

Resuming on 45 for two, Easterns who dominated in the Faithwear one day games were skittled for a low total of 146 in 54.4 overs after Northerns first innings gathered 207 in 65 overs.

The rising Manyumwa who removed Hamilton Masakadza on the first day continued with his demolition exercise adding Timycen Maruma (1), Doug Hondo (0) Forster Mutizwa (52) and Natsai Mushagwe (0) on the second day, restricting Easterns to just 146 - 61 runs in the red to Northerns.

Despite the resistance of Mutizwa who made 52 off 68 balls batting at number nine, the usually effervescent Easterns batsmen found no answer to the probing of Manyumwa, Elton Chigumbura and Trevor Garwe.

Chigumbura took three wickets for 34 runs while Garwe got one for 54 runs with a superb running out of Prosper Utseya (27) involving Garwe and Ray Price shutting shop for the Steven Mangongo coached side.

With an advantage of 61 from the first innings, Northerns put on 150 for five on the second day before stumps with a half century for Cephas Zhuwawo (51) who fell to Shingi Masakadza caught by Benard Mlambo after facing 77 balls lasting 137 minutes on the crease.

Sam Mwakayeni (34) and Regis Chakabva (35) restored the punch after Easterns bowler Shingi Masakadza removed the struggling Tatenda Taibu for a four ball duck for the second time in the round. The former Zimbabwe captain managed just seven minutes of occupation. Opener Dean Mazhawidza faced 14 balls before he became Masakadza’s first claim of the day going for just one in 14 balls.

Skipper Chigumbura and spinner Raymond Price were unbeaten when stumps were called for 38 and 8 respectively. They will resume their charge to the finishing line on Wednesday morning hoping to post a bigger score before declaring. Their 211 run advantage looks a perfect for victory as their bowling has been impressive.

With the form of Manyumwa and the able assistance of his perfect all rounder quality of captain Chigumbura and the spin duo of Price and Graeme Cremer, Northerns remain the favourites to take this match.
