Cricketers to be honoured

Sports Reporter

FOUR leading Zimbabwe cricketers are in the running for tonight's Croco Motors Cricketer of the Year award at a ceremony to be held in Bulawayo.

Skipper Prosper Utseya, Raymond Price, Tawanda Mupariwa and Hamilton Masakadza had an outstanding season for a rebuilding Zimbabwe cricket side. The winner of the esteemed award is by and large expected to come from the four.

Sean Williams and Elton Chigumbura are other players who could find themselves on the podium for many of the available prizes on the night. But the big one will certainly be the Cricketer of the Year accolade.

ZC administrators, national selectors and some journalists drawn fromthe mainstream media were part of the panel.

Zimbabwe Cricket head of media and communications, Shingai Rhuhwaya yesterday declared that all was ready for the awards ceremony.

She confirmed that Croco Motors would sponsor the awards to the tune of US$45 000.
“Croco Motors are the main sponsors of the event. They have been very helpful in our training to put everything together for the awards. The sponsors have had some of their team down here working with us towards the event.

“This is the biggest night in Zimbabwe cricket. The function we are putting up is one where anybody who is somebody in cricket will be in attendance,” said Rhuhwaya.

Rhuhwaya said there would be several awards presented on the night including the Volunteer Award.

“We will be presenting the Volunteer Awards in conjunction with the International Cricket Council where we are looking at honouring those who have gone beyond the call of duty in the past in trying to uplift or serve cricket. In all there are 43 recipients so we will start with those who are based in Bulawayo.

“But the night will certainly be for our Cricketer of the Year. There will be Batsman of the Year, Bowler of the Year and Coach of the Year award prizes too. There will be 30 prizes,” said Rhuhwaya.

Of the top contenders Mupariwa was a prominent feature in Westerns' strong showing in which they lifted the domestic Twenty20 title in the City of Kings in May.

Masakadza and Utseya played a pivotal role in the Easterns' Faithwear series victory.
Price was a key figure of the national team.

The panel was expected to look at performances in the Logan Cup, Faithwear series and national league.

If Bulawayo misses the big prizes in the men's category, they are likely to dominate the women's awards.

Rhuhwaya said ZC would unveil the franchise cricket concept this evening.

“We will launch the franchise cricket. There will be key stakeholders in attendance apart from the cricket family members. It is going to be a great evening for Zimbabwe Cricket, we have pulled all the stops to ensure a great evening,” said Rhuhwaya.
