Domestic cricket beckons

By Tinashe Kusema

UNDERFIRE Zimbabwe Cricket is set to face their toughest test in their bid to spruce up their battered image when a fresh season under the new franchise system officially kicks off next week.

After a disastrous series against rising Asian minnows, Bangladesh, to whom the hosts lost 1-4, all eyes will be on the mother body to see how they react to the faltering fortunes of the national team and revive the country’s interest in the domestic league.
The franchises will run five first-class teams for the season which begins on Saturday under a new domestic calendar.
The five franchises; Eagles, Mountaineers, Tuskers, Southern Rocks and Midwest Rhinos will be based at Harare Sports Club, Mutare Sports Club, Bulawayo’s Queens Sports Club, Masvingo Sports Club and Kwekwe Sports Club respectively.
ZC provincial offices and provincial boards will continue to administer development in schools and provincial club leagues but the franchises will, however, have total autonomy in their operations. Under the new set-up, ZC has since suspended Central, which resulted in massive movements of players to corresponding franchises.
As the countdown approaches its final stage, there has been a hive of activity as all the teams wrap up their final preparations with all the chief executive officers of the teams expressing a general feeling of excitement and preparedness.
In the capital, the home of the Eagles, Hugo Ribatika said the team did not go through many changes and he is generally satisfied with the progress made.
“There have been a few changes in this area with Zimbabwe international Elton Chigumbura retaining his captaincy while Douglas Hondo has been roped in as assistant coach,” said Rubatika. “Practice commenced last Tuesday for our first encounter here at home against the Mountaineers but the administrative staff have been working since beginning of June to ensure that we have minimal hiccups.’’
Besides maintaining the larger crop of their players who made up the Northerns team, they have only engaged the services of Greg Lamb and Barney Rodgers to bolster their batting.

Fan-Bloody-Tanstic!!!

Great news these are just the kind of players we need, two good batting allrounders who if selected for Zimbabwe can fill in the 5th bowler quota which we struggled to fill in the recent Bangladesh series

This is an extremely great news...

Northerns does bag sufficient good players and now they have picked two quality players. Barney Rogers is one of the my favourite players. He will be certainly pushing for the national side having got an ODI average of 30+ with 5 half centuries. Left handed batsman, he has an excellent batting technique. A player to watch out for !

Greg Lamb is an experienced player in domestic circuit. According to his biography, he was awarded the most promising Zimbabwean player in the year of 1999. By now, I think he is a lot improved player. Another plus point is that he has represented Hampshire CCC in UK County Championship. That means he has got enough quality domestic matches under his belt. Aggressive batsman who normally bats at no 7/8 and can bowl off spin.

Lamb and Rogers set to play for Eagles

Cricinfo staff

September 7, 2009

Zimbabwe's new domestic season finally gets underway on Saturday, with Greg Lamb and Barney Rogers both expected to appear for Eagles.

The new season was due to start in August, but not all the franchises had managed to sign their players in time.

Under the new set-up, Zimbabwe Cricket will continue to administer the sport in schools and provincial club leagues, but the franchises themselves will be in control of their own operations at domestic level. Zimbabwe cricket have, though, suspended Central, resulting in a mass of players joining other clubs.

Adding to the general level of excitement about the forthcoming season, the chief executive of Eagles, Hugo Ribatika, was pleased with his team's preparations.

"There have been a few changes in this area with Zimbabwe international Elton Chigumbura retaining his captaincy while Douglas Hondo has been roped in as assistant coach," Rubatika told The Sunday Mail. "Practice commenced last Tuesday for our first encounter here at home against the Mountaineers but the administrative staff have been working since the beginning of June to ensure that we have minimal hiccups.''

Lamb, who was released by Hampshire at the end of last season, looks set to play for Eagles alongside Rogers, a so-called "rebel" who walked out on Zimbabwe five years ago.
