BPL 2016 hit by Match Fixing & Female Entertainment Scandal

Post by ##Dougie Mariller »

A Local player named Jupiter Ghosh of franchise Rangpur Riders has claimed that he was asked to fix matches by their team manager Sanwar Hossain during the latest scandal-hit Bangladesh Premier League Twenty20 tournament 2016

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) said it would investigate after Rangpur Riders player Jupiter Ghosh alleged on Monday that team manager Sanuar Hossain had told him to fix match results just before the start of the tournament earlier this month. He claims that he was dropped from the team when he refused to comply.

"The BCB is investigating complaints lodged by a cricketer of BPL 2016 franchise Rangpur Riders against an official of the same team," the BCB said. "The BCB recognises that the allegations and counter allegations brought forward by the player and the official concerned, which includes breach of discipline and corrupt practice, are of serious nature." The Rangpur Riders expelled Ghosh on disciplinary grounds on Monday after he went public with the allegations. The BCB has also suspended Ghosh and Hossain from the tournament while the investigation is conducted.

The BPL, modelled on the glitzy and lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL), has been blighted by fixing rows ever since it began in 2012.

The tournament was suspended for a season in 2014 following revelations that former Bangladesh captain Mohammad Ashraful and four others including New
Zealand's Lou Vincent were involved in fixing matches. Ashraful was banned for eight years after he tearfully confessed on national television, but was allowed to return to domestic cricket earlier this year. The BCB's anti-corruption officials have also thrown out at least four suspected bookmakers during the previous editions in an effort to ensure the tournament is corruption-free.

Beside Match Fixing Issue, there is also an incident happened where two national players have been fined for getting entertained by female guests in their respective hotel rooms.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board has levied a record fine on two national team players for what it called “serious” breaches of discipline after they reportedly entertained female guests in their hotel rooms. Pace bowler Al-Amin Hossain and batsman Sabbir Rahman were both fined around $15,000 for “serious off-field disciplinary breaches” during the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) Twenty20 tournament, said the BCB in a statement. It gave no details of the charges against the players, but the Prothom Alo daily reported online that they had taken female guests to their hotel rooms during the tour. “The players have been reminded of their responsibility as national cricketers and have been warned that any repetition of similar acts of indiscretion in the future will result in harsher penalty,” the BCB said.

The fines are the highest ever imposed on a Bangladeshi player on disciplinary grounds. Al-Amin’s amounts to 50 percent of his BPL contract money for playing for the Barisal Bulls while Sabbir’s is equal to 30 percent of his pay from the Rajshahi Kings.

The BCB also fined Sabbir and Afghan cricketer Mohammad Shahzad 15 percent of their match fees over an onfield bust-up. Shahzad, who was also banned for two matches, nudged Sabbir with the bat when the Bangladeshi player celebrated his dismissal during a match on Monday.
