[Series Thread] Australia in Bangladesh 2017

Post by Kriterion_BD »

Aussies will be missing two big players in Starc and Pattinson who are both out injured (Pattinson more precautionary so he will be fit for the Ashes). Asides from those 2, the Aussies are sending in a full strength side. Excited to see Cummins.

Bangladesh are training in Chittagong right now with a 3-day practice match going on between the training squad. Final day should be underway with the following notable scores:

Mominul 73
Nasir 62
Haider 50+
Nazmul Hossain Shanto 50+

Its a timely knock from Momin who was dropped from the last Test - and unfairly so, IMO. But he is competing with Imrul and Sabbir for the #3 slot and with both of them failing in the practice match (besides being inferior batsmen), Mominul's chances look better to reclaim his spot. At least I sure hope he does.

On the bowling front, Shafiul Islam came out of nowhere to take 5-17 to be the pick of the bowlers. Rubel also managed to take 3. I think it will still be Mustafiz and Taskin as the specialist quicks, but there is always the chance of the think tank leaving Taskin out.

Can't wait for this series I think it will be a tight one which you wouldn't expect from an Australia v Bangladesh series but this just shows how well BD have progressed of late. Although Australia played so well in India they still struggle in these conditions and BD will know if it wasn't for Steve Smith's heroics with the bat the India series wouldn't have been so close, so getting him out early is the key.

Australia will recall Usman Khawaja to bat @3 and it's no secret he has struggled against quality right arm off spin so young Mehidy Hasan will target him. Aston Agar is also favoured to gain a recall as the second spinner supporting Nathan Lyon after Steve O'Keefe was left out, BD will look to target Agar who has a first class average of 40. Hazelwood and Cummins will be the big threat with their pace and bounce even in India they were damaging.

For BD their spin attack is the key Mehidy, Sakib and probably Taijul will likely make up the attack with Taskin and Mustafizur taking the new ball, I can't see the seamers causing many problems for the Aussies so if BD are thinking about playing an extra batsman I would think they'd leave Taskin out and play Taijul instead. Warner especially will feast on the seamers if it's a flat track so I think BD will open the bowling with Mehidy to limit the impact Warner has on the series, usually when Warner has a big series Australia wins on the other hand when a side can keep him quiet they usually end up on top. Smith may handle the coin toss but it's not hard to see Warner is very much the inspirational leader of this Australian side.

Can't wait for the series to start I'm predicting a close fought couple of tests with Australia winning both unless the weather plays havoc.

The weather I suspect will win both Tests. The only option is to make a minefield of a track so the game finishes inside 3 days - but in my opinion thats bad cricket. I don't mind wickets that turn to support the BD spin attack...so wickets like we had against England would be the best way to go.

I think the Aussie lineup is more settled than ours...only question is whether its Swepson the leggie who gets in over Agar the SLA. We have a lot of lefties so a leg spinner with a bag of tricks might be the better option. I suspect AUS will go something like this:

Warner
Renshaw
Smith
Khawaja
Handscome
Wade
Cartwright
Lyon
Swepson/Agar
Cummins
Hazlewood

For BD the lineup I'd like to see is:

Tamim
Soumya
Mominul
Mushfiq
Shakib
Mosaddek
Liton
Miraz
Taijul
Taskin
Mustafiz

But I fear Mominul has a slight chance of getting into the XI and Mosaddek a better shot, but still not guaranteed.

I think we'll see this lineup for the Aussies

Warner
Renshaw
Khawaja
Smith
Handscomb
Maxwell
Wade
Agar
Cummins
Hazelwood
Lyon

If they win the first Test they might blood Swepson .....

Wouldn't be surprised if BD whitewashed us. Australia's pretty hopeless.
We might put up a half decent total if Smith can stop sulking long enough to score a few runs.

Interesting reasoning. You reckoon AUS will sacrifice having two frontline spinners Lyon and Agar/Swepson plus an extra in Maxwell, but rather go for Cartwright? You may be on to something there. For one it's risky to go in with just two seamers, so Cartwright being there - his limitations considered, may actually be what they actually do. I see you've put in Khawaja at 4 and Smith at 3. Maybe Smith might do what Joe Root did and put himself at 4 as jaybro, line up suggests. Personally, I'd like to see Khawaja open with Renshaw, with Warner coming in a number 3 permanently, then Smith and Handcomb to come.

Nice to see Bangladesh has the luxury to leave out some very good batsmen.

NB: On a separate note, Ireland don't have Stirling, Niall Obrien and Young against the Dutch. http://www.espncricinfo.com/series/8074 ... l-cup-2017

Well I cant seen Australia having less than 3 seam options, but they might go all out spin. if Pattinson was in, hed be in ahead of Cartwright for sure (Patty is an all rounder, isnt he?).

but now the talk is handscomb might keep wicket so they can take an extra spinner. Have the Aussies ever played 3 front line spinners before? Or Maxwell will be the 3rd spinner with a big bowling responsibility.

but having a backup WK on turning pitches could be a very costly mistake. unless Handscomb is actually a better keeper than Wade.

Both Cummins and Pattinson in the same XI? Twice the likelihood of bowlers breaking down and you shorten your batting in the process too? Debatable.

Maxwell isn't exactly a top spinner, and AUS have had - in addition to Jason Krejza - Cameron White and Michael Clarke (plus Simon Katich) before, and both if not all 3, are arguably pretty much as good or bad as Maxwell (but all five are certainly better than Raza, Williams and Malcolm any day in my view  )

I'm not sure about the whole Handscomb - Wade issue. Handscomb is still finding his feet as it is, and Australia desperately need him to kick on. Unlike India and England, I don't think most countries right now, have enough FC depth in talent to make substitutions every match in a 4-match Test Series. I think Handscomb will be "protected" as a result.

I think the MItchell Marsh issue still hurts Australia. He was supposed to be their Ben Stokes. Alas

You obviously didn't watch the Aus v India series Hhm

We played Hazelwood & Cummins in the last two tests without the third seam option of Mitch Marsh.

Handscomb will not keep zero chance.

Cartwright barely bowls so having him as a third seam option isn't really on the cards plus Maxwell scored a ton 2 tests ago.

I'm 90% sure the lineup I predicted will be the side baring injuries

Looks like that [Mod edit: language] Hathurasingha has now got Mominul in his crosshairs. top scored in the intra-squad match and dropped from the team albeit his form has dropped. I hope the senior players oust his ass Kohli style.
