Between 2004 - 2007 AB de Villiers played 33 Tests and averaged just 36. He had 3 hundreds and 13 fifities.

So far Bavuma has played 26 tests and he averages 33 with 1 hundred plus 9 fifties.

Crucially, while AB played 22 Tests at home and 11 away, Bavuma has already played more 2 Tests away -13 - than AB after 25 Tests, and just 13 at home so far. While Bavuma's away resume included ENG, NZ, IND and AUS, AB only has AUS!

The only way for Bavuma is up. After 33 Tests he will have a superior average than AB. Over his next 7 Tests, he needs just 4 more fifties and just 2 more hundreds to match AB's tally.

Yes, many average players were dropped by the Proteas. But there's a good chance Cook, Rudolph and Kuhn would have scored double hundreds against this embarassing excuse of bowling.

Bavuma got an unbeaten 30 and a 70 in the first Test. He got out not because of a good ball, but because he was unnecesarily put under pressure to score fast runs before settling in. Which is unfair because even the captain Faf didn't go at a run-a-ball either.

None of this suggests that he will be a better player than AB.

In conclusion, yes Bavuma is not going anywhere. He averages 56 at number 5, and 42 at number 4. He has already been tasked with being the side's number 4, a new role for him.

That experiment won't be terminated anytime soon, especially considering AB was "rehabilitated" at number 6, with Smith, Gibbs, Amla and Kallis among others, all batting above him.

I've posted many times how long QdK and Rilee were poor in ODIs/T20s but not dropped. I've also posted several names that were average throughout their Test careers.

Rudolph played 48 Tests, and in 20 innings (10 Tests) in Australia, he had just one hundred and zero fifties.

The difference between AB and Rudolph is that they had set positions for the most part early in their career. But in those few Tests, a lot away, Bavuma has batted all positions from opening to 7, except first drop (a position which Amla as captain immediately moved himself from to 4, but was forced back to it soon after he resigned from captain).

In contrast, QdK was supposed to be a specialist batsman so SA could bring in another keeper-bat capable of a 40+ average, e.g. Klaasen. He failed at number four and was quickly put back at number 7, and that plan abandoned.

In fact QdK averages exactly 30 at number 6 in 10 innings over 6 Tests. In 22 innings (across 16 Tests), QdK has no century.

All QdK's 3 centuries are at number 7 where he has played 18 innings over 12 Tests. And he still has just 3 centuries in total by the way.

And yes, Bavuma has 2 less centuries and half-centuries than QdK, and doesn't mean he will be a better batsman, but it shows that he's not exactly far behind him, or AB at the same stage.

Bavuma was dropped before remember, so he hasn't been in the team continously.

And all those players got dropped :D
Marsh and Yuvy had very long careers. Gotta look it up now. Wow, Mitch Marsh 21 Tests with a 21 average...that is shocking for a team like AUS.

Yuvy...40 matches with an average of 33...I guess his talent carried him for so long.

Mitch’s Marsh is an all rounder so you’re comparing apples and oranges there

India kept going back to Yuraj due to his ODI form

South Africa obviously are keeping Bavuma because they think he’ll turn into a good player and the side is doing ok with him in it. Bavuma was also one of the better batsman in England.

But 1 hundred and an average of 33 in 25 Tests His name should be at least in the conversion of being dropped

I guess if Ramela was any good he’d been a chance to replace Bavuma

Anyways if all things are equal AB DeVilliers should replace Bavuma in the next test, but we know things are not ‘all equal’ in the Rainbow nation

Disappointing tour for Mominul who departs for 11. Looked quite promising after scoring 77 but then only scored 15 runs in the next 3 innings. Some very ordinary shot selection by him and an lbw review that he should have taken. Despite that, you'd have to say he is a strong player of pace with his 3 dismissals being down to poor shot selection twice, and a poor umpiring call and failure to take the review. If there is a type of bowling he seems to struggle against it must be off spin. Taskin too has proven that he isn't ready for this level of cricket.

Overall, this series ought to yield some serious changes in the lineup, especially with a proposed tour of Australia next year in mind. Shakib's return will probably yield the automatic omission of either Sabbir or Mahmudullah. My XI for the home series against SL in January would be:

1) Tamim
2) Imrul
3) Mominul
4) Mushfiqur
5) Mosaddek
6) Shakib
7) Liton
8) Miraz
9) Taijul
10) Roy
11) Mustafiz

AB was used as an opener and a keeper batsman early in his career so probably why he started a bit slow.

I doubt Bavuma will get 2 hundreds in his next 7 Tests but let’s see, I’m sure he won’t get dropped no matter how poorly he bats.
