I think its necessary to have different standards and criteria for different sets of players based on the most likely contribution he is likely to make. So for example, if a young talented player (eg Mosaddek) were to get out for a duck or hit a well composed 50, one should interpret it differently than if an older, less talented player (eg Mithun) got a duck or hit a well composed 50. The reason is that with Mithun a 63 represents the best score he is liekly to make, given the hundreds of domestic and international innings behind him as evidence.

Take Vusi Sibanda as an example. He's one of the most talented Zimbabwe batters since the rebel saga of 2004. But what are the chances he would score a Test century in Dhaka this month? Contrast that to the likelyhood of BRMT scoring a hundred...much higher chances. So if both were to score a well composed 50, would you give them the same grade? I would not, because Taylor's greater chance of building on that innings earns him more leniency IMO.

Thus Tamim gets less total runs, but a slightly more lenient grade than Mithun.

Playing favourites pure and simple

Tamim should be held to the highest standard of all the XI because he is the most experienced and was in good form.

Mithun’s 1st innings was the only reason BD got a somewhat reasonable total.

Of course. Who wants to watch players they dislike play?

How would you feel about this ZIM Test XI?

1) Chari
2) Cephas
3) Maruma
4) Chigumbura
5) Chibabha
6) Mutumbami
7) Chakabva
8) Ndovolu
9) Tiripano
10) Ngarava
11) Mutombodzi

Imagine these guys were picked because Taylor, Raza, Williams, Ervine, Jarvis. Chatara, and Kasuza all had meagre returns from an away series in say Sri Lanka.

You're getting off topic here, we're just talking about a review/rating of a player's performance in an isolated match

I don't rate Mithun either, but he was the only batsman to cross 50 in that match for Bangladesh, he deserved a better rating than the rest of the batsman who all failed twice

If neither of us rate him, can we agree that he is at best a mediocre player? And mediocre players get mediocre grades. A D+ would be harsh if Mithun were a) on debut or b) a young player with few chances. He is neither of those.

Again you’re missing the point, a match rating should be an isolated assessment of a players performance, not his overall rating career wise

Team managment has reportedly talked to Riyad about focusing on limited overs cricket. Good call IMO. Despite him hitting 3 hundreds in the last 18 months, including one in NZ, I think at 34 he needs to make space for a younger batsman. If they do end up dropping him for the ZIM test, it will be great so long as his replacememt is not Sabbir, or Imrul, or Soumya.

Just need to get rid of Mithun now, who's not even half as good as Riyad.

Best likely XI would have to be:

1. Tamim
2. Saif
3. Shanto
4. Mominul
5. Mushfiq
6. Mithun
7. Liton
8. Nayeem
9. Taijul
10. Jayed
11. Ebadat

But ideally, if no injuries or bans I would probably have:

1. Tamim
2. Shadman
3. Shanto
4. Mushfiq
5. Mominul
6. Mosaddek
7. Shakib
8. Nurul
9. Nayeem/Miraz
10. Jayed
11. Ebadat/Taijul
