Ireland v Netherlands ODI Series

Post by maehara »

Ireland play Netherlands in two ODIs in Dublin next week, on 16 & 18 August. With Netherlands now ranked on the ODI table, and both them and Ireland hot on Zimbabwe's tail in the ODI rankings, the series takes on relevance for Zimbabwe's ranking. So, for those like me who keep an eye on such things, here are the permutations:

Series tied 1-1: No change in rankings
Ireland win series 2-0: Ireland go into 10th place, Zimbabwe down to 11th. Ireland would have a 9-point lead over Zimbabwe.
Netherlands win series 2-0: Netherlands go into 10th place, Zimbabwe down to 11th. Netherlands would have a 12-point lead over Zimbabwe.

Not looking good for Zim in the rankings, then, especially since SA are our next opponents - picking up any ranking points from that series won't be easy...

Ireland headed for a big win in the first ODI. Also, its carnage at Scotland, as Afghanistan is looking good for a dominating win. Mohammed Shahzad hammering a 72 ball 100! The Irish and the Afghans look to be the best of the rest at the moment.

I wouldn't bet against an Afghan win if they play Bangla anytime soon. They must seriously get more matches against at least the Asian teams.

...and 2-0 to Ireland it is, with my other team taking the 2nd ODI by a whopping 9 wickets.

Yup, and by quite some way - Zim have got a lot of catching up to do. This makes me both happy and sad, depending on whether I'm in Irish or Zimbabwean mode..!

Here's the bottom end of the ODI rankings after the series:

Code: Select all

                        Pl Pts Rt
9 Bangladesh 24 1277 53
10 Ireland 8 361 45
11 Zimbabwe 24 859 36
12 Netherlands 6 103 17
(Kenya 13th with a rating of 1)
