Graeme Hick announces his retirement

Post by brmtaylor.com admin »

I haven't ascertained whether it is effective immediately or at seasons end (I think the latter) but either way, it's the end of an era :(

25 years at the top level, it is quite extraordinary. And he's averaging 45 for this Championship season... if he was in Zimbabwe he would be an automatic selection for the team still, at age 42.

What a fantastic career, despite his shortcomings in Tests (which he still scored a few centuries in - I bet many people would be very happy to have a Test average of 30) his longevity has been amazing in First Class cricket.

He was on the Darren Gough Cricket Show on BBC Radio 5 last night - you can listen to it here. End of a legend - although by the sounds of it he's not ruling out making a few quick bucks from IPL/ICL before truly calling it a day...

End of an era indeed. What a wonderful servant of the game he has been. He could have easily carried on for another couple of seasons at least. Anyway, all the best to Mr. Hick.
