Bangladesh Spring Surprise on NZ

Post by maehara »

Seems Bangladesh may not have been so decimated by the exodus of players to the ICL after all:
Bangladesh Maul Sorry New Zealand

Remember that NZ are the 3rd-ranked ODI side at the moment - yes, playing conditions in Bangladesh give the home side a significant advantage, but I think most people were expecting a NZ sweep from this series (which would have taken them to 2nd in the rankings) - not going to happen now. Just remains to be see whether it's a one-off upset, or if the rash of departures has led to Bangladesh accidentally stumbling onto a more effective squad...

That NZ are among the top ranked ODI sides shows just how poor all the other sides are. Even though the rankings don't explicitly say this, there's Australia and South Africa and then a lot of daylight between them and the rest.

NZ are a very weak team. They have one world class player in Vettori, a couple of very good players in McCullum and Oram and that's about it. Styris is past it and Ross Taylor isn't quite there yet.

It's hard to see an absolute mauling like this as an "upset", but Bangladesh absolutely bowled beyond themselves, and NZ must have been playing at their absolute worst. I'm sure NZ will be looking for revenge in the next match.
