In the olden days guys wemt straight from the U19 team to the national team. Ashraful, Aftab, Alok, Talha, Mortaza himself, Enamul Jr, Nazmul, Shahadat, Nafeeses (Iqbal and Shahriar), and maybe a few others Im forgetting now. You could almost build an entire XI from that list of failed teenage dubatants! At most, few of those guys probably had one A team series vs Zimbabwe before getting their Test cap.
It all changed with Mushy (18 on debut), Tamim (17), and Shakib (19). It took them a little while to get going, but they each proved their class was beyond the guys listed above. Shakib and Mushy are the oldest, turning 30 this year, so hopefully they have another solid 7 years left in the tank. I expect Tamim and Shakib to play till 36-37, and Mushy with his work ethic to play till 40. Including Mortaza, that is 4 teenage debutant successes from at least 13 experiments. Not a bad ratio, but we had to go through all the failures consecutively. They have been around a while. Mortaza is surely on his last legs (literally) after 7+ operations. I hope he can chug through the 2019 World Cup as he is still effective bowling at 125 kph.
Since then, with a more solid lineup the average age of debutants has increased. I think Mustafiz is the only throwback, went directly from U19 level to national team as a 19 year old. Taskin got his senior cap at 18, but had one season of BPL under his belt.
Right now we have a couple of young guys who might get a call up soon:
Mosaddek Hossain has played a few LOIs already, and been around the Test squad and with a first class average near 70 (despite bagging a pair on debut) with three double tons by his 21st birthday is the next in line I believe. Problem is, there is no space for him in the lineup unless we drop a specialist spinner from the XI.
Afif Hossain is a 17 yo left handed opener who's got 2 tons from his first 4 games and might be the next big thing.
Nazmul Hossain Shanto has already debuted in NZ and looked fairly solid, but again no space for him in the lineup. Lost his place in the squad to Mosaddek, who IMO should have gotten the cap ahead of him anyways.
Saif Hassan is another young opener who is doing fairly well. We already have 3 openers who are doing well in Tamim, Soumya, and Imrul. So tough for any new kids to get in.
We dont seem to have any spinners coming up, although perhaps the SLA Sanzamul Islam might be looked at. Leggie Jubair has fallen off the radar...I had huge hopes for him. Regardless, with Mehedi, Taijul, and Shakib we have 3 solid slow bowlers as it is.
Ebadat Hossain is a 23 yo fast bowler who I think would be the next quick in line for a call up in the near future. He's about 6 feet tall and bowls around the 140 mark. Unique background in that he comes from the Bangladesh Air Force and never played age group cricket. Just made his first class debut this season and done well so far.
